I’m not on lemmy.ml, but from what I’ve read, the majority of users there are dead set against any large corporation looking to encroach on the Fediverse. The mods seem to be following the will of the people.

The issue is that large tech companies rarely restrain themselves when there’s a big pile of money to be made. The odds are high that Meta will exploit this whether it was an accident or not.

The gist of HIPAA is that the patient decides who knows their health status. If they want to announce every rash and sniffle on Meta and thus to every advertiser and government agent in existence, HIPAA won’t stop them.

Doctors are allowed to broadcast their own, personal health issues all over social media, but not anyone else’s.
