Because there is no real Operational Security justification for its ban, that doesn't instantly catch all US-based social media platforms as well. It's not about security, it's about control. The feds have no under-the-table deals or even overt surveillance partnerships with TikTok. They do have that with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and beyond. In fact, the CIA has financial stakes with those companies as well, and often were early sources of funding for them: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/social-media-is-a-tool-of-the-cia-seriously/

Which I guess is fine because the CIA has never been the enemy of the American people, ever.

It's weird to think that you would support banning TikTok because of the influence China might have on US Culture, but are totally cool with the fact that Facebook is a tool of cultural export across the whole globe. I don't remember the last time TikTok was the instrument of genocide, but hey, if you want to support that, go for it.

What exactly would be the OpSec justification for blocking it?

It is exciting to watch the hands of the dooms day clock inch closer to midnight.

What does your vpn tell you about Facebook, Instagrams, Twitter, Threads, and Reddit?

You don't think corporations are at war with the American people?

[–] RedWizard@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Facebook isn't a threat to national security according to the federal government, which is where the "American people" get this notion from in regards to TikTok.

How could Facebook, a site that regularly colaborates with the feds voluntarily, be a threat to the nation exactly?

It's about the network effect. As it stands now, the network effect is built on the backs of many different nodes on the network all contributing together.

But as you've seen, the amount of people on the network is nothing compared to the total of all the Threads users (~30mil). Once they federate with the rest of the network they will provide a MASSIVE boost to it's enharent value. As people from other instances connect with friends, brands and public figures and alert services on Threads they are slowly becoming dependent on that content.

The users on Threads are not going to be as privacy or technology curious. Almost all of them will be existing Instagram users. They're not going to move to another instance, especially if they can't keep using the threads app, which could have features the other instances don't support.

Almost all social media platforms have this network effect because they were first and/or strategically built their network.

Facebook utilized Universities, requiring uni email address to register and they had features that made it easy to connect with your classmates. Once they hit a critical mass they opened it public.

Twitter piggy backed off of the 2007 SXSWi conference. Displaying pubic Twitter feeds from users at the event on large LCD TVs, they connected users with a similar occupation and intrist. Sending their tweets per day from 20,000 to 60,000.

Threads is building it's network on the back of Instagram while also on the back of Twitters failings. They're co-opting the bad vibes of Elon Musk to syphon users off the platform.

Ultimately, there will be a short term boon in the perceived "value" of the fediverse, and in reality, Threads and Meta will make up a large percentage of that value. Over time, people will have become accustomed to the content Threads provides and when Meta nolonger needs to be federated, people will leave with them.

One of the things you realize at some point is that your brain craves structure. Maybe it's not true for everyone but that is my experience.

The hard part is, your brain wants to do the most rewarding thing in the moment. This is bad for building and maintaining structure.

So, what I might suggest is this:

  • Schedule the things you don't like doing. This could be anything. Showering, taking out the trash, doing homework, checking in on friends and family. Use your calendar, or an alarm on your phone, whatever will get your attention.
  • Get a white board if you can. The more physical real world items you can use to help you track stuff, the better (your phone is a trap!). My whiteboard is right next to my bathroom. Put it "in your way", a place where you can't help but see it. I track today's date, so I'm forced to update it every day (I don't always, but seeing just the old forces me to update it). I track a medication streak, to help me be aware of how consistent I'm being. Every Sunday I look at my calendar on my phone and write down the next week events, so I can prepare and not be surprised.
  • Find someone to help you initiate the important stuff or be there with you while you do the important stuff. Brushing my teeth regularly was almost impossible for most of my life. My SO would just do it at whatever time each day, and it seemed to come naturally. Long story short I asked her to do it with me every day. It was, embarrassing to admit at first, but now I feel weird NOT doing it.

You can't plan every moment of your life, but you can build a plan that applies every day. Stopping to plan for "tomorrow" every day is exhausting, but planning for the week is easier. Also, eliminate as much choice as you can. If you feel fine eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day because it's easier that way then do it. Don't let anyone make you feel shame over it.

I also like to reaffirm a montra that comes from addiction recovery that I think applies to people with ADHD. Instead of thinking, "I have to do these things forever", I think "I just have to do these things today". Don't worry about tomorrow, just work on today. If you're keeping track, you'll be surprised with how consistent you can really be, and it'll hurt less when you slip up.

He would need to run some SQL scripts to drop the content I think. I could be wrong though.

But as a rule, I'd defederate from ANYTHING NSFW image wise. Text NSFW is probably fine.

The liability is way to high.
