On lemmy? Nah

You're probably right. In sense I relate to that xkcd comic, but in reverse because of my poor memory, that's really why I linked the XZ-utils backdoor case, as I had almost forgotten all the surrounding details.

as I was pretty young and wouldn’t even have had the means to

That's why I paid for the license in 2008, I was earning pretty good money by then, even though. I also paid for some other software like Fraps ($37) and Winrar ($52) around that time hehe. It's not like it's that expensive either when you consider they're lifetime licenses.
Which reminds me, I should start donating more to open source projects I use now that I've switched to linux.

It's to restrict the rights of citizens. It's classic culture war bs.

Dang, mIRC actually turned 30 in February. Crazy. Even though I no longer use mIRC, I'm glad I bought a license back in 2008. It was $20 then, and it's $19.95 today. Somehow, despite inflation it has gotten 5 cents cheaper 😅

I did notice my RSS downloader having downloaded Fedora-KDE-Desktop-Live-x86_64-42 from distrowatch yesterday morning, but I wasn't entirely sure if it was the real deal or still beta.

2025 morning routine before going to work: Taking a picture of your odometer to ensure not getting scammed.

I guess it isn't that surprising after the VW emission scandal where they ran a different configuration, reducing emissions, whenever someone was testing the car.

I feel like an important piece of the story regarding how directx changed game development is that it was Gabe Newell, a microsoft employee at the time, that led the DOOM95 porting project which cemented windows as the gaming OS .
It feels poetic that Steam was part of getting Vulkan and Proton off the ground.
