It's great that Canada is producing more batteries. It's sad, though, that this company used to be an early Canadian pioneer for battery technology, and was sold for a mere $5M to Japanese (which later was merged and moved to Taiwan), and now Canada is investing $280M to build a plant without clearly mentioning if they are gaining partial ownership of the company or own parts of the factory.

$2M bail seems not that high considering how rich the family probably is...

Sorry I misframed it. I mean that since there's no need to reveal phone numbers, there could be an opportunity for spammers to increase spam by creating many accounts, and Signal should preemptively find ways where such spams could be reduced. However, I realized after posting that the article says we still need to sign up to signal with a phone number. However, there's still the risk of impersonation (by writing someones username with tiny changes) and people trying to add vulnerable users by username (which they might be using on other platforms) instead of phone number.

I imagine unrestricted usernames would make spam easier than with phone numbers. I'm just hoping they have a way to control this.

About time! Hopefully they will find ways to reduce spam though.

Yeah it's unfortunate they don't have more core development in Vancouver. For instance, a major part of the Chrome team (and previously Stadia) was in Montreal. Microsoft should have been doing something similar in Vancouver (esp. considering the time zone too).

Meanwhile, Microsoft uses it’s Canadian offices as visa waiting rooms before shipping them off to the US.

Microsoft's game division includes Canadian studios like The Coalition and Compulsion Games. The latter literally relied on being acquired by Xbox in order to publish their 2nd (and 1st major) game, now they have grown from 40 to 80 since the game was published. Those studios are still located in where they were founded even after acquisition. In general, Microsoft has a hands-off approach with the studios, allowing them more freedom to develop games.

Sure, the game industry has its own problems and salary issues, which is something people in the industry are trying to improve, but at least the creative & technical talent stays here in Canada rather than being relocated, and many people can work in game studios for a few years before easily moving into other areas of software development.

Is it even "AI-powered"?

Ramirez, of Brunswick, Georgia, where her nonprofit is also based, refused to provide details about the algorithm’s inner workings and declined interview requests. By email, she said the tool was a starting point for social workers and did not determine whether a child would be adopted.

Seems like they are throwing in AI just for the headlines.

The blog reported that Copeland, a Republican, confirmed that the accounts were run by him, saying they were a “hobby” he used for “getting rid of stress.” 1819 News reported that Copeland asked them to not out him, but they did so anyway, even though it does not appear he had taken any public positions against LGBTQ issues that could be construed as hypocritical.

Honestly their Belgian beers (Leffe and Hoegaarden) are not bad for commercial beers. Probably not as good as local low volume brewery, but definitely better than Bud/Corona
