Nah I didn't. Have had it for jobs and stuff too. People are usually willing to do email if you ask.
Default gnome has a great keyboard based workflow or the option for a pointer-device based workflow. It doesn't copy the outdated windows workflow and actually succeeds in pushing its own ideas.

I love being family&friends tech support. Someone asks why their PC isn't booting and it turns out they dropped a desktop while on and just didn't think to mention it. Or the other case where I had to salvage parts from a dev workstation that had been thrown out a window by a developers mother.
My landlord told me to download WhatsApp and I just said "nah I use email". Super easy cleared up in 5 seconds.

Two small (110mah) batteries in my sweep last me more than a week and charge in less than an hour. I think you might be overestimating how much battery power you need.
