Americans “exist” only technically, because the biological processes are happening, but most are barely aware that the world is a place where things happen.

Listen. Don’t say too much. Say something if they’re going to take steps that lead to harm: i.e. self-harm, suicide, homicide, crimes, etc.
Ask them what they need from you. Only give advice if they ask for it or ask “what would you do?”
Don’t badmouth the fiancée. They could get back together and then what? It’s good to stick with the person you’re talking to: “that must be awful for you” and not so much “what a horrible person.” You’re not trying to emphasize victimhood or the possibility of revenge. Etc.
