They're still doing this. I just recently put my first game page up on steam and this is one of the things you sign.

Or better yet, don't buy one at all
I'd recommend starting with modding. It gives you a huge shortcut to many aspects of it, letting you get something playable faster, which is the rewarding part. As you get more experience, you can try more challenging mods, and eventually you'll reach a point where you want the greater freedom of making a game from scratch.
I prefer having your cake and fucking it, too.
I used to be the type to want to consider a variety of opinions and play devil's advocate. The last decade has radicalized me into being much more staunchly progressive. Stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.
It's an easy trap to fall into if you're a generally open minded person I think. I didn't want to follow the herd, and I didn't want to take things at face value. Those aren't bad ideals, but when living in a corrupt and dishonest world it basically means giving too much space to people who aren't worth it.
"I have much more misery to inflict upon the industry first!"
It's a pretty clear conflict of interest that they do that IMO. It means they have direct monetary incentive to demonetize as many channels as possible so that they don't have to revenue share. It's pretty infamous how often creators lose their first day momentum on a video due to a false positive, but google actually makes more money from that happening.
On paper demonetizing crappy channels doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world, but their track record is very poor with this kind of thing, and again they have a real incentive to make it create false positives (or at least not to prevent them) to increase their cut.
I don't know enough to be able to extrapolate anything from it, but sounds like there's a lot to unpack for those like you who can.
YouTube still puts ads in demonetized videos, right?
My friend was just telling me about this recently. I've somehow completely avoided them so far.
I'm from Washington and I'm surprised we're not higher. In the winter it's dark during both morning and evening rush hour, meaning most people are doing their commutes in the dark. It can feel pretty dangerous sometimes.
Not sure honestly. It was a few months ago now. I bet you can see it somewhere, considering how many games get uploaded.
