This also helps curb discretionary spending too. I have so much stuff I don’t need, and I give it to Goodwill, which I know is somewhat bad, but it’s better than them ending up in a landfill. I wish I could just put all the stuff I have that works in a central place like a store and just give it away to those who need it. I have put large items on the curb for people to take for free (and it’s almost always gets taken), but I wish I had somewhere to do that for small household items.
Setting up an annual or more frequent neighborhood freesale, or asking the city to do a “curb day” - where a day is set to put all the items you don’t want on the curb and people drive around and pick up items - is a good start.
