There were a few sites that tracked manufacturer adoption of when the telemetry black boxes got installed, but I cannot find the specific ones I referenced a few years ago. You can “shop” for telemetry insurance and check that way too. The car won’t be eligible if it doesn’t have the hardware.

Pre-telemetry cars from the naughties are the sweet spot. No cell connection either. New cars are icky.

Likely b/c your comment reads like you are stating OP is using it when you probably meant a more general public "you"? That'd be my guess. I think most, if not all, here would agree to not ever use alexa, that bitch.

Fuck you! I'm eating!!

That time, you were “That Guy”.

Yes, that seems to be the case. If you do cancel and move, the new owners won’t get a landline. The carrier in this particular area has also contracted out any rural service work.

If I had seen the printed name I would use the Peruvian pronunciation not knowing any better. I got the correct one from the article and given the topic felt it was a playful and appropriate tweak of the spelling so others might know too.

Interesting story. I believe that Kia dealer in "Lie-ma" is going to offer her a free car.

If they decide to go to court over the dealer name, which she now owns, the legal process may turn over stones and shine too much light on them. Dealerships don't like to do that. Even this "repo" or recovery could be a variation of a "yo-yo" scam, but they'd have to be working with the finance company for that to work in this case, I think. Still a maybe. For now, she's out a car and if she had a trade-in that's likely gone too. But I think that will change soon enough. Good on her!

In some areas you can no longer get a landline. I was discussing this with someone who lives rural and the phone company will not serve any of the addresses outside of towns.

That's strange to me as I still have a POTS line and have never been without one through my different abodes. I will say that only a few calls come in on it, but I use it for outbound calls quite often. Almost all of the spam calls come in on the cellphone now.

I remember reading about the last hand-crank phone being removed (As an aside, my memory had this happening 20 years ago. Lol, it was 35!):

https://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/07/13/Remote-Idaho-town-retires-last-crank-call/3557647841600/

"Smith said with hand-cranked telephones, 'sometimes the connection cracks up and you only hear every third word.'"

Hey, just like my cell service!

the root causes of enshittification can be defeated by organized collective action.

This is the fly in the ointment. I (and most here) do all the things to avoid enshittified products, but as you've mentioned it is work. Some of the "work" is fun because I am "technologia" oriented, but many of the people I know simply cannot be bothered to consider alternatives to these shit products. They don't know it is shit and think that's the only choice and follow along. I can't blame them for their choices too much. Life is full of other things they are occupied with, so I do try and help when I can.

Many that are obligated to be advocates for the common man and these issues have abandoned their obligations to the people they are supposed to serve. They have essentially been enshittified too and we haven't yet organized to solve that issue which seems to be the most important enshittification to date. More to come later, I am sure.

This incident likely would not have happened without Israel's actions against the Palestinian people. By totally ignoring that, you seem to be defending famine and genocide. Right?
