I also recall a story of a doctor in southern Missouri (east of Springfield iirc, so near Tennessee & Kentucky: think Lindsey Graham & Mitch McConnell) who succeeded in getting funding for a new institute / center... wait, let me rephrase this: he was a JOB CREATOR who BROUGHT IN HIS OWN FUNDING to start a whole new era of medical research in that part of the country, which is their stated dream right? (what Midwestern town doesn't have as their top claim that they want to be the next "hub" for biotech/whatever?) He did not merely talk the talk, he SUCCEEDED in this endeavor.

And ofc he got death threats, for both him and his family. So, that was the end of that. He wanted to help them, but not at any cost. This was very early in the pandemic - one of the first stories like that (that I saw anyway) - but obviously it would not be the last.

Fast-forward to 4 years later, and the damage done to our entire nation's healthcare system is incalculable. BUT NOT EQUALLY distributed - some areas are affected more highly than others. Some areas have roads, bridges, police, firefighters, teachers, doctors - you know, "infrastructure" - while other areas not so much. We are fast dividing into two Americas, and while we have always had facets (rich vs. poor, white vs. black, mean vs. women), I would be hard-pressed to think of a more noticeable dividing line b/t "has access to medical care" vs. "not" (plus the latter also has almost literal slavery - with more black people incarcerated under a for-profit prison system than were ever used as slaves).

And I could even halfway respect some of that - not the death threats to be clear but I mean like if they want to pass a law and convert themselves to all become Amish then that's their own lives, so what right do I have to have any sort of opinion about how they want to be, you know? even if it means their own death, so long as it's their personal choice - the main trouble being that these people are not content to merely make choices for their own selves, but have to impose it upon others. e.g. if they choose to "not pay for medical care" in their own, rural areas, but then they drive into the cities and demand medical care there - sometimes holding literal guns while they do it too. (after the repeal of Roe vs. Wade this attitude got a lot more obvious)

Anyway, yeah, it's going to do a lot of harm. I suspect that was the point, behind one of Russia's various disinformation campaigns, though "we" (Americans) are the ones dumb enough to have fallen for the tricks.

Except NSFW. And even that will only blur or filter it out if you check that box in your Settings. So the choices are to label just about everything ("this post contains discussion of religious significance", "this post may be sensitive for younger viewers", "this post contains depictions of trauma") either NSFW, or else just not do anything at all.

So, there are some options, though not many.

I don't often post news articles, and this is actually my first post at all from this account, so I do welcome feedback in learning how to do it better. However, I am not sure that I understand most of what you are saying. Anyway thank you for sharing the link for others if you think it will help them somehow:-).

First, the linked page says right at the top where the original came from?

I do not know the security considerations there - I would have presumed that was strictly under the control of Ghostarchive, but I do not know if it could be spoofed. Anyway I will defer this topic as another consequence of the spam one that makes you want to not click the link in the first place, rather than an issue on its own.

Second, I can view the entire article (ending with "But investors then will be buying Reddit on a leap of faith, rather than old-fashioned discipline.", then "Follow @AnitaRamaswamy, on X"), so I think whatever issue there might be on your end. Although I did have to hunt around for the "Continue without supporting us" to click on in that horrid & giant half-page advertisement blocker (the modal kind that shades out the entire background until you deal with it - also there's no obvious "X" to close it, and the text is not in the top right, nor bottom right, but in the bottom left so definitely forcing you to pay attention to it, if you want to read the article). I guess that got through whatever process Ghostarchive uses to strip such things away - although at least all the ads are gone (in multiple browsers that I look at this link with), and that's not nothing:-).

Btw I tried the wayback machine internet archive first, but it failed to find the page, so this Ghostarchive was my second attempt, and since it worked I just went with it.

Third, what do you mean have the potential for spam and trickery? Can you point me to something to read more about that?

Anyway I added it to the main body as you suggested. It looks odd like that b/c for some reason that link was both already there (in the quote block), yet refused to show up for some reason, until I added something after it - presumably some internal coding mechanics for this community.

One of the questions asked ("Why do I have to give 200€ more to get the s24+ just to get these simple features?") was comparing S24 to S24+. While I have not looked it up, traditionally those versions range from SXY (small) to SXY+ (medium) and SXY Ultra (large), but are otherwise the same phone, so I would be surprised to hear if e.g. the S24 was foldable but the S24+ was not?

As for whether it gets more expensive to make something foldable vs. to make something more compact, I suspect the devil is in the details, so ymmv and you just kinda take each option as it comes. Other factors may help mitigate those costs e.g. a younger company trying to break into the big leagues might try to give phones away for virtually no profits in exchange for their increased market penetration (e.g. OnePlus used to be somewhat this way, now they are in the big leagues, more or less).

But your other point, about more materials: no, I believe that it's more complex than that b/c it's the effort of fitting things into tighter spaces that is more constraining. Imagine packing for a long vacation and/or a job interview at a far-away place and you get the idea - if you can fit everything into one suitcase that's good, but a tiny backpack is much harder to accomplish, and to take nothing and just live with what you can carry on your body alone is REALLY tough! (especially if you want all the normal features like not smelling bad) i.e. the materials costs, while not negligible, have not been the driving/limiting force for many years. At least according to everything that I have read, but I am no phone manufacturer!:-)
