To support the instance. Hosting costs money. Having an advert toggle could be a good way of making it work without forcing it on users.

On the sync adds - it makes more sense for instances to have adverts as they have ongoing costs. That said, some apps might also have backend infrastructure they proxy through. They also have a right to make money off their work, if users don't like them they can switch apps.

But the community itself is effectively dead, any content posted there would only appear in the posters instance and not go to everyone else.

I'm not aware of any having adds currently. Just donations.

Others have answered quite well but here is some info I think they have missed.

You can see what instances are federated/federated here: https://lemmy.world/instances (for lemmy.world) change the front to your instance to see who they allow/block. (Federated at the top, de-federated at the bottom in a different section.

When your instance defederates another instance, it won't show communities from that instance. Users of the blocked instance can still see your instances content.

(I don't actually know what happens to comments from the blocked instance on posts in neutral communities)

I assume that's gaming revenue not total?

...I wish politicians would do what they believe is best for the country/world instead of their party... dammit

If your willing to spend the money, testing things in practice can be much quicker than planning everything out. They admitted that they didn't expect it to reach orbit and that anything beyond the launchpad would be a success. I suspect that Elon pressured them to launch too early though.

The SLS is built using tried and tested technology, so it should have (and did) work, but due to (effectively) corruption it's stupidly expensive per launch.

The falcon 9 was 'impossible' to re-use untill they did it. It's now revolutionised the launch business. If they can do that again by doing the 'impossible' then it will have been worth it.

I do kinda agree with you on the lack of an escape system though, but if they can prove reliability on unmanned missions then it could work.

Having to use an external tool gets in the way of a lot of people just through friction unfortunately. Lots of the people here are quite techy I think which helps though.

I need to take another look through there though, I keep running out of content.

The more staff a company has, the more chance of mistakes/idiots.

They should have scans to pick a lot of this up though.

As long as the data they lost doesn't get more details, that get more detail that gets customer data... or anorher signing key....

It's a bit of a discoverability problem I think, much easier to find content on your own instance. (So new communities are opened on instances with lots of people)

If you're going to give it a go, look at my instance (science Fiction and Fantasy Alliance) or the literature cafe one. Hopefully you can get unbanned though.
