it gets him coming and going. alzeimers is degrading his mental capacity, which as you mentioned, was already only the level of a six year old.
a very average six year old.
this puts me in mind of the conservative neighbours I had living out in the country a couple of years ago. need to borrow milk, get your car started, towed out of mud, whatever, they were there to help.
but they quit America to come here because it was becoming a socialist hellhole.

if your article can be summarised as "no", you don't have enough material to write an article.
don't give your characters a tragic backstory. give them a tragic **front**story

since we're supposed to not be dealing with a monkey paw/genie situation, i didn't use it this way, but in general I'd recommend making it your first wish under any such circumstances.
