Per Wikipedia since 2022, due to involvement with trafficking oil for the IRGC.

Officially, "the IRGC's constitutional mandate is to ensure the integrity of the Islamic Republic." Functionally this means that they act as a religious oppression/enforcement group within Iran (think Spanish Inquisition, but Islamist uniformed military), and externally they are basically a state-sponsored terrorist organization.

Venezuela has been doing business with them for a long time.

The US's behavior in these matters under Trump has been reprehensible, but there is also a lot more context to all of this than "US bad, Venezuela good".

  • CANON - established or agreed-upon constraints governing the background narrative, setting, storyline, characters, etc., in a particular fictional world.

  • CANNON - a smooth-bore artillery weapon, typically muzzle-loading.
