It is a corporations fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits over any other things. That obviously includes human lives.
Does a human life have a value to other humans? Yes.
Does a human have a value to a corporation? It has a value and a cost, if the cost is higher than the value of the human then it is a risk to the value of the company and can be liquidated.
But that won't attract a worm!
They would only need to pay the driver 1/3 of the hourly wage for your 20 min ride so 5.3 dollars. Uber/Lyft would make 29-30 dollars.

Well when you read the last book and learn about Miles Teg you will see the spice wizard. The laser swords though wouldn't happen. When a laser intersects with a shield then a giant atomic explosion happens.
I don't have a full list but Frank Herbert had once said there was 16 coincidences between the two stories. One or two is a random chance, 16 is plagiaristic.
Apparently based on notes Frank left, for all we know his "notes" could have been:

This was the most unrealistic part of The Wire. Somehow a few really smart guys managed to become detectives. Of course one was a dysfunctional womanizing drunk and the other was McNutty.

You have to take it with your left hand behind your back, then pop the catch on the holster, then lift the barrel clear of the holster. All that while under fire or in a deadly situation.
All I can imagine is this guy dead on the ground with his left hand awkwardly caught between his belt loop and his pistol, bleeding from the asshole he accidentally shot himself in.
