I solved one of these once upon a time.

There was a function that wasn't called from anywhere in the project which if deleted caused the whole system to fail in test and (presumably) production at runtime. It turned out to be scripts for a cron job that were only on the servers. I moved them in to the project and thus version control. Mystery solved.

Back in my distro-hopping days, I found it be unstable both when updating and in day-to-day use. Updates broke it and applications regularly crashed.

It was around the year 2000 and I installed red hat on a laptop but I never got xorg working so I gave up and didn't try again for a couple of years.

Beginners need to learn anyways, why not skip the “not-for-beginners stuff” and go all in?

Because most people will likely want something that works out of the box so they can learn over time

I'd been tinkering with Linux for years and never using it properly when I saw how Windows Vista performed on my new fairly high end PC and formatted and installed Ubuntu and never looked back. Of course it wasn't an entirely smooth experience, setting up X properly was fun in those days but the performance was so much better.
