I missed the part where the car was at 150k, so I see what you're saying now. I just saw the "10 years" and was thinking that, with average driving and regular maintenance, that would be pretty shite. But at 150k, yeah... there would be some warning signs before it just slipped off, but it could be overlooked if "regular maintenance" is all that was being done

I was told when I was a kid, "after about every 50k, ya need to take the car in for a 'tune-up' and have it looked at", and it's not the worst advice

You had me laugh with replacing "nearly new oil every 3k miles" though. And every time, they're trying to upsell me on the damn wipers and airfilters. Like, it's ok I've got that covered when I need them... yes, I know it can affect gas mileage... just put the damn airlfilter back! I just need the oil changed please

A timing chain (not timing "belt) is designed to last the life of the vehicle. Oil maintenance of a car with a timing chain is an absolute must, but the chain isn't routinely replaced... if ever. So a 10 year life-span is pretty crap, if the oil changes were maintained. Even 120k miles puts a 10 year car at 1,000 miles per month, which is relatively heavy usage.

I assume the genesis 120k replacement has more to do with the nylon guides and/or shit quality, if that's the recommendation

I keep aspirin in my house as part of my first aid supplies, just in case there's ever a heart attack in my house or nearby

Can someone tell me what "FOSS" means? I get it in context, but what's the acronym? I'll look it up later if need be

I've bought HP a few times, because the new printer was about the same price as buying new ink cartridges. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just being real. And I'm not proud

Nah, that's actually a my bad for not getting my point across. Looking back on my comment: I know I was trying to commend you, but I must've gave up on trying, because it fell completely flat (Not to just you, but to me too when I reread my reply). Dunno where my head was when I posted it, but I can see that I stopped trying at some point and just hit "send"

The reason I commented to your post at all was because my first reaction was, "holy shit, that's so specifically accurate and funny at the same time... how was this person seeing a fucking heat map, and able to respond with their own map, that is both wildly accurate and hilarious, given the context".

So I scoured the maps, because I wanted to commend you and also try and be as witty. Hawaii was one of the only (obvious) differences I could find (which makes sense when talking about diabetes and poverty)... but then idk what I did. Just literally gave up on being clever and posted a "spot the difference" comment

So yeah, doesn't much matter in the grand scheme of things, but I still wanted to let ya know just in case... I thought your comment of the map was surprisingly astute, and I was kinda flabbergasted that it seemed like you just had that on standby. Like you were just waiting for this moment your whole freaking life, and then pulled that very specifically accurate map out of your ass, as soon as it was relevant.

My comment fell flat on it's face, because it truly couldn't be topped. And I think I must've gotten distracted and gave up on my response, because the only thing I really wanted to convey was... fucking brava my friend. That was some S-tier shit you dropped; and so casually too. It wasn't necessarily news to me, but hot damn if it wasn't quick.

My original comment should've just been "you win" or some shit like that, but I failed on both ends to get that across

So very much so... holy hell friend bwahahahaha!!! Well fucking done (and pardon my language). But that was the very definition of "under-rated comment" to me. My applause to you

Now that's a discussion, and I appreciate your pragmatic response. The issue seems to be the flaming that is currently happening. Hopefully it cools down, and we can all resume our daily beliefs in a rational way. Right now, it looks like a clear brigade. A fear response to opposing views is common; but you don't get people listening by asserting that what you believe is correct.

Better to defederate until an understanding can be established about code of conduct. Currently, it looks like a heap of comments that aren't helping the matter.

From hexbears own announcement, they're trying to tell their users that defederation can happen if they don't play nice. And here we are with users creating discourse because of pre-emptive defederation... and it isn't helping their cause. Defederate and let it bump, it's not their instance to moderate. They won't even allow federation to other instances themselves, without admin approval. How is that fair? If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck... it's probably a duck.

This looks like and sounds like targeted ideology, that isn't receptive to opposing views. Show good-faith to actual discussion and it wouldn't be a problem. But just look at the comments and see for yourself that this isn't good-faith, it's a thinly veiled attempt at a brigade. And you can ignore the comments and look at the announcement itself: they're trying to keep their users in-check (from the get-go) for polite discussion, but have already failed

If you don't like my opinion, good! Let's talk about it, cause there's plenty of ways to do so, outside of lemmy.world. That's how it works, and people being mad is not going to change it. Kindness and logic will

We all know the world's fucked up, we don't need another "saint" telling us they have the solution. We're all pretty freaking over any final solution that anyone has to offer

Those are absolutely not problems specific to the US. But it looks like you're not trying to understand any viewpoint other than your own. Good day sir

About 7 years for me (I think); but also waiting for Boost. Haven't gone back to reddit since I switched (beside dumping my awards on "fuck spez" posts real quick), and I'm more than content here. But I also can't wait for Boost

I agree that teachers can't/shouldn't have to raise students, and I believe most teachers would agree. But it ends up happening all of the time because a lot of people want to help as best they can. The teachers who do go the extra mile(s) shouldn't have to be put in that situation to begin with. And the teachers who do their job well and nothing else, shouldn't be shamed. It's a societal problem that doesn't have to be... but we'd rather blame "work ethic" and "this new generation", than invest in the underlying issues. And that same rhetoric has been happening for probably over a century (at the very least)

Saying "CPS already covers what we can't really change" is a farcry from actuality. Do you think social work is a prestigious position? If you do, are they funded and compensated appropriately? If people are just "popping babies out of their vagina" and expecting help to raise them; why do we work so hard to undermine the autonomy of a woman's choice to give birth in the first place? And if "every life matters" (so very much) to those who oppose choice... why aren't we helping the families who aren't allowed to choose because of some bullshit beliefs/laws that have nothing to do with an observed reality? Hypocrisy all over the damn place.

It's a control and power struggle that has been going on for longer than we've been alive. We can have rational thought AND compassion at the same time; but many of those who influence our "laws" don't give a damn about what happens to poeple after their own ends or objectives have been met.

If we don't believe teachers are responsible for raising kids, than we better damn-well make sure we are providing our own with the resources they need. Or fuck it, let's keep passing the blame in order to make ourselves feel righteous and forget about the very complex issues. Complexities are hard anyway, why bother when I'm already comfortable?
