Honestly, this is 100% the solution for this problem, especially for sharing with a child.
Now, the issue of having a "license" and rights to play a game, vs actually owning the game is still a valid point of contention.
The microwave, because my roommates insist on having a model that beeps every 30 seconds after it finishes cooking so you don't forget you had food in there. They still forget, though. It just gets on my nerves while I try to wash some dishes while waiting for the microwave to finish, or if I'm using it as part of prepping while cooking.

That's what I figured. If it was raining over the clear part of the river, I'd assume all the runoff from the land around it would make it muddy as well. The heavy storm is probably up river and washing all the muddy water down, until it gets blocked by the beaver dam.
For sure it's likely either a learned helplessness or a passive indifference. People like to give up before they even try.
