I liked NMS, but I was very disappointed how "same" all the planets felt. It was just some biome with some points of interest scattered about. No cities, or city-planets. No large scale mining or industry. No megastructures like Dyson spheres, swarms or ringworlds. The largest concentration of population is 30-50 in a settlement or space station.

ZFS isn't built-in. I don't know enough about btrfs to recommend it.

Bog-standard Debian with LVM. LVM can also do RAID, but you could also do mdadm below LVM if you prefer. Keep it simple.

Happy they ditched Electron. Shapez 1 ran terribly on my PC. Too bad they went with Unity instead though.

You got that the wrong way round. It's Embrace first, then Extend and Extinguish.
