A biological man convicted of raping and murdering a woman and child underwent “enormous suffering” after being denied state-provided transgender surgery prior to being executed, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is facing intense backlash for a tweet sympathizing with the killer that made no mention of his past crimes.

Following the execution of Duane Owen, one of the longest-held inmates on Florida’s death row, the ACLU published a post lamenting the anguish of the man who killed and raped a mother of two as well as a 14-year-old girl.

“The state of Florida never provided medically necessary gender-affirming care to Duane Owen — causing her enormous suffering and violating her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment for the more than 30 years she was in state custody,” wrote the far-left non-profit which is partially funded by billionaire George Soros.

In legal papers she drafted, Owen wrote that she "should be accorded the 'essence of human dignity' and be allowed to become 'who she was meant to be'" before her death.

No one should be killed by the state. The time to end the racist, unfair and cruel death penalty is now. pic.twitter.com/EsT17NkVR1

About one in four children in the United States are living in fatherless homes, making them far more likely to suffer from mental health and behavioral issues, research details.

An issue brief published by the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) finds clear correlations between children raised in fatherless homes and developmental challenges such as anger problems, violent tendencies, and overall lower educational scores.

U.S. Census Bureau data shows that as of 2022, more than 18 million children across the nation live in fatherless homes — indicating that about one in four children do not have a father figure in their household.

I had been having trouble getting meaningful results from the fediverse on Google, and after seeing this post, it seems I'm not the only one. So, I created a site that helps search the fediverse in your search engine of choice (it currently supports Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and Dogpile).

It currently only searches the top 15 lemmy/kbin instances due to search engine query limits (I'm not sure how to fix this short of making my own search engine), but I've tested it and it seems to provide access to the majority of fediverse content.

If you have contributions or ideas for improvement, feel free to check out the project here or shoot me a message. Hope this helps people! :)

Edit: Update in progress including improved search queries and support for Mastodon/PeerTube (Google only, unfortunately)

Sadly, exploding heads is not included. lol.

4-5 days ago, while riding public transportation, I was in a telegram channel that was normally fine, no extreme content, and up came a gore video that I ended up watching 5-10 seconds of (and fully regretting)... But I partly needed that time to process what was going on, and to know if that was really happening....

Just this morning, I was curious after hearing about the Zion Williamson scandal and searched for information on one of the women involved in his issues... And there I am on the subway again, and I got just this feed that is all Instagram-tier butt-shots & thong dances...

Again, I don't really linger too long, but I am curious as to what the overall gallery looks like and was partly amazed that there was no SFW material. But, again, this is on Instagram, so while not exactly SFW, it's still not too crazy...

My question:

Is it terrible to view this kind of material in a public place if you are at least holding it close to your face or otherwise seeking some amount of privacy?

Am I the asshole for lingering on this material? I was conscious of the people around me and at that moment I was certain nobody could really be looking in on what I was watching unless they were literally stealthily looking over with just their eyeballs. The train wasn't overly crowded, after all.

A federal judge scheduled E. Jean Carroll’s second defamation trial against former President Donald Trump for January 2024, just days before Republican primary voters will begin the presidential nomination process.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan set Carroll’s civil trial against Trump for January 15, 2024, in a brief scheduling order.

The scheduling comes days after Kaplan allowed Carroll to amend her second defamation lawsuit against Trump to seek up to $10 million in damages.

Last month, a nine-member jury found Trump liable for sexual battery and defaming Carroll and granted her an award of $5 million in damages. The jury awarded Carroll $2 million in damages for the sexual battery claim and $3 million for defamation.

Carroll’s second lawsuit stems from comments Trump made in 2019 regarding her accusations of rape. Kaplan allowed Carroll to amend her lawsuit to include Trump’s comments at a recent CNN town hall, where he insisted he had “no idea who this woman is” and that her allegations are a “fake” and a “made-up story.”
