I’ve posted this before but the propaganda around Oct. 7th and the mass casualties makes it really hard to know the precise details of what happened that day.

I’ve seen good evidence that armed Palestinians committed sexual assault and rape on that day. I haven’t seen good evidence that this was some kind of systematic strategy that can be traced back to Hamas leadership or ideology. But that’s a very difficult thing to prove.

That said it’s been a long time since I’ve researched this so if anyone has a good, factual, unbiased overview, I would be quite interested.

It’s also true that there have been a lot of rape and sexual assault accusations against the IDF as well.

Hamas, the IDF, Likud, and anyone else who perpetuates indiscriminate violence against civilians can rot in hell.

PTB.

Setting aside the question of your true ideology, I don’t think people should be banned for their ideology. Bans should be based on behavior.

Ironically I hate tankies as much as anyone and I’m having a big fight with one right now but I still think they should be allowed to participate on the same footing as everyone as long as they follow the rules.

Edit: after reading further this is even worse because the rules are actually pretty much in line with my position. Tankies are explicitly allowed to participate as long as they follow the rules. So this isn’t even supported by anything other than impotent mod rage.

I love how they have such high standards and sophisticated critiques of western democracy (which of course I agree with) but then somehow this is what real democracy looks like lol. If you try to strike for better working conditions or higher pay you get murdered. Democracy!

In my personal opinion, the US is closer to socialism than any of these countries they lionize. And that’s a low bar.

No, I’d rather see them abolished. But they do exist, and allowing the US or Europe to decide which ones are acknowledged is a big problem in today’s world.

People who exercise their own autonomy should have that autonomy acknowledged. Full stop. Pretending it doesn’t exist is harmful, even if that autonomy is being used to hurt people.

Did I give some indication that I disagree with that idea? Lol

I find that “recognition” is just a tool that powerful nations use to oppress less powerful polities. That’s why I am arguing against it.

There’s no contradiction between this argument and anarchism. As I said elsewhere in the thread, I don’t believe states should exist. But giving the US, China, and other imperial powers the right to decide which ones are acknowledged or dismissed is part of the problem.

Lol so I agree with you 100%. There is a strong case against the recognition of any states on that basis.

But, so long as we have a legal system that functions on the basis of this social construct, the idea that we should capriciously decide to recognize or not recognize various states doesn’t serve any practical purpose that I can see. Especially when they, as a matter of fact, do exercise authority over a given territory.

You don’t have to think Israel should exist. But what good does it do to pretend they don’t when they obviously do?

Is there a less shitty platform on which to watch this? I am not downloading their shitty app for one video.

Not recognizing states that obviously exist is extremely silly.

What about this scenario is imaginary?

Is he? Did I miss something about DeSantis?

I don’t really agree with this. NPR did talk about the threat to democracy. The problem was it was old news at that point, and frankly, it doesn’t seem like most Americans cared that much. So this coverage didn’t get much attention.

The reality is that most Americans care more about their personal finances than the state of the country as a whole. This is the cause of many of our problems. I’m not sure NPR was going to be able to fix this issue through their coverage.

Hope this is on topic enough. Nice job to Angelenos for standing up to these bullies and defending our transit projects.

Certain trees survived, according to Cal Fire, because they have a natural adaptation to withstand fire, such as thick bark, a shape that sheds embers and higher moisture content than the structures that caught fire. “While trees may still be singed, they are often less flammable than structures,” according to the post.

Would like to see this model across the whole world! Local people are the backbone of any truly sustainable conservation plan.

Once the epicenter for deadly human-elephant conflict, an eastern Nepal village along the Indian border has transformed into a model of coexistence.

Villagers, once fearful, have adopted elephant-resistant crops and beekeeping, and through a rapid response team, they safely guide elephants away.

Government policies, conservation efforts and shifting community attitudes have significantly reduced fatalities, with no deaths reported in the area since 2015.

While Bahundangi offers a model for coexistence, villages along the migratory routes for elephants have become hotspots for human-elephant encounters, requiring the need for conservation corridors and education to mitigate conflicts.

Walking? For 20 minutes? My father did not make all this money for me to be forced to mingle with you commoners

Candy caps (Lactatius rubidus) are fruiting abundantly on the Northern California coast right now. My family and I picked about 2 pounds today. For those unfamiliar, these mushrooms develop a strong maple flavor and odor when dried.

I’ve never had so many before, so I’m interested if anyone has made anything interesting with these. I’ve made ice cream in the past which was excellent but it might be good to mix things up a bit.

I’m particularly interested to see how they would work in more savory dishes and if anyone has eaten them fresh. Is it worth doing or do they need to be dried to be appreciated properly?
