I don't care much about 'open source' by itself. That's just a way to share code and workload between devs. I'm not a dev, I'm barely much of a geek (but I did wrote a few Bash scripts, does that qualify? ;)

I care a lot more about the software being Free/Libre.

I moved to Linux because of the GNU and because of its focus on, well, user freedoms. Also, because I care about privacy and worry to see how quickly it's being eaten away.

So, I always favor a Libre software over a proprietary one, even if it lacks certain features. But I'm not against using something proprietary when I have to.

That's great news :)

Yep, and like I said it's good it exists but it should not be needed ta all, it's way too hacky. I really think the ability to link between components (no matter where and what they are) in what presents itself as a fediverse ~~should~~ edit: ought to work without hack.

[–] Libb@jlai.lu 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yes, I know it exists (thx to you, btw ;) but it's still a hack and it's far from being intuitive. Too many options are offered to anyone that just clicked a link and is now facing options and some odd delay before the link works. It's good to have it, but it should not be needed at all to begin with ;)

I had a quick look, and most of those seem to be niches that can’t be filled until we reach a higher population.

100% agree. And I know it first hand with !journaling@sh.itjust.works: it could be much larger as one just easily see when comparing with the similar reddit sub, but we don't share the same user base to begin with ;)

As it is I don't think we need more communities. We need more active members and simpler way to promote specific content. Like I said in my other answer, for me the real issue is there: for something that is proud to be 'federated', linking anywhere from anywhere should be rock solid and dead simple. It is not, far from it. If it's even doable. Heck, even within my own community: I don't know how I can safely put links to any previous thread or message in a thread that I'm sure will work for anyone clicking them no matter the instance they're logged in.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious and it's already a thing? But I think getting that ability to link stuff would be a huge win for Lemmy, no mater the number of active members ;)

Discovery still needs to be improved. And we need more active members, that would be delusional to say otherwise.

But I also think a unified linking mechanism between instances, communities, threads and to a specific message in any thread no matter the instance the reader is clicking the link from would help encourage people to link a lot more. I don't link as much as I would like to mostly because of that reason. And more links would also help discoverability of interesting content.

Until people stop going to reddit, why would they stop enshittifying?

100% agree. That's also why I'm so surprised more people are not realizing how bad it's turning (I quit posting on reddit for that reason, I still read it though)

Hi

Alright. I gotta come clean. I saw your avatar, instantly recognized the fountain pen,

A person of taste, as I can see!

visited your profile, and entered your blog (so… light stalking :/ ).

:p

It. Was. Fire. Seriously amazing.

Thx a lot.

Your post, A Non-Disposable Desktop Computer, is a mindset I’ve been trying to portray to my Mac friends for years, and it won’t stick.

I don’t know you or your friends, so take this for what it’s worth but many longtime Apple users like myself have grown a thick skin against people knowing better than them. I mean, there is a lot of ready-made ideas going on about Apple and Apple users: Mac are mere toys, Apple is a fashion statement, they sell dumbed-down tools for... stupid users, and so on. That’s silly. Like, really silly. So, being tired of hearing the same silly comments may explain why your friends aren’t listening at all to any critics or remarks, even when they are reasonable ones, or when they’re spot on ;)

It’s also a lot of personal choice and… priorities in life. And those can change.

Thing changed for me when I started realizing Apple was less and less trying to make computers I liked to use and computers that helped work with as little friction as possible. Because, for me, all my choices are dictated by one simple rule: time is the most valuable resource there is, I can always earn more money but I can’t get a second more to live when my time will come to die. So, less friction using a tool means less wasted time. And that’s a win for me.

The other thing that changed is that I grew tired of Apple’s green-washing while at the same time they were selling non-fixable device. I realized that, by forcing myself to stop using those newer Mac, I could help reduce the amount of e-waste I was creating. By using a devise I would be able to easily upgrade and fix, or ask someone to do it for me. That meant a PC. Then, because I was not happy at all with the giant spyware and ad-machine that Windows is, that meant, I would have to use GNU/Linux. And that changed everything for me.

I fell in love with the GNU philosophy which in turn helped me go through the roughest corners of Linux. We tend to accept more flaws from our best friend than from strangers ;)

Which Linux distro did you end up using? Why did you choose it?

Linux Mint.

The reason? Brace yourself for some deep motivation and very subtle considerations. Or maybe not. Prior to Mint, I used Debian on my laptop which I liked a lot save that I never managed to make my Airpod work. After testing those Airpod with a few other distro with as little success I tried Mint and bam they worked. They just worked out of the box. I never looked back.

Now, I run Mint on my desktop too and they would need to do some real stupid thing for me to switch to another distro. I don’t know, put ads in their OS, or force some AI crap onto me.

And here is a link to Git repo with the two PNG and the SVG, aka the editable file for anyone to play with and change it as they like.

Could be worth posting the two versions/links in the OP?

[–] Libb@jlai.lu 1 points 6 months ago

Ca pourrait presque être le nom d'une philosophie à laquelle je pourrais adhérer, ça ;)

Thanks for making this, and especially using an excellent design in a shareable meme format that pitches Lemmy simply to users.

Thx.

One day we may need to have ads to pay the bills if we have another massive Reddit exodus. What are your thoughts on creating an alternate one that says something like “your data not tracked or sold”?

I'm hostile to ads, fully and openly and I'd rather pay than be forced to look at ads. But that's just my personal opinion and I would not want to impose it on anyone. At least, I think that's also what freedom should mean: the freedom for anyone to disagree with me and me with anyone ;)

The first version of the file had no mention of ads (I simply deleted it by mistake ;) and you can get the SVG here.
