My spouse and I have been together for 30 years and counting. My journal is sitting on my desk, she could grab it and read it anytime she wants, without me even knowing it. I also know she would not do that without me asking her to do it. Like I would never go through her own papers without her asking me to do so first. We’ve learned to trust one another and also to respect the other’s privacy (we both have part of our lives where the other has little room, and that’s perfectly fine).

Could a burglar read my journal? Sure. Does it matter to me that some random dude know what I did this Monday? I don’t think so. What would matter a lot more is that burglar being able to access our financial and health data, important documents, and stuff like that. But those are all secured in one way or another. Our computer drives too, are encrypted. So, a if someone was to get their hands on our computers/phones the worst thing would be that they would need to wipe them completely to be able to use/sell them, but they would not access our files. Annoying as fuck for us but still not a big deal since we have remote backups to restore all those files.

It was more complicated when I was a kid. A lot more complicated. I started very young to write in a journal and with my mom being... the person she was... it was not the happiest time nor the most respectful for my privacy. I tried to hide it, to no avail, I then learned to replace some names and verbs with others to make it harder to read it and then, still a kid, it was back in the 70s where there was no Internet to instantly translate anything, I quickly learned to journal in... English, a language my mom did not read. If you’re still living with mom and dad, how do you protect your privacy and do you feel like you need to?

Also, I could probably reformat the entire laptop if I could only figure out how to replace the Google Drive for sync backup for roughly 15 GB of personal photos and videos.

If by replace you mean find a non-Google alternative that will work fine under Linux (or Windows, Mac iOS/Android), you may want to check Filen (affiliate link this matters to your specific requirements, read further).

What is Filen? It's a small German company which offers cloud with end-to-end (zero knowledge) encryption, aka what's considered best practice security and privacy-wise. They don't offer as much features as Google or other big cloud providers, it's a really small company, and their apps are kinda on the rougher edge of things but they work fine. The one real drawback for photos backups on mobile is that it's not fully automated (one needs to start the app for it to start copying the pictures) but it works fine on Mint (fellow Mint user here) ;)

By the default, their free plan is 10GB which is not enough for you but if you use my affiliate link, or anyone's else, you double that free plan to 20GB (it's a one time extra, you can't stack them up but it's really free for you to keep and use). Also, if you ever decide to upgrade to a paid plan, you would keep your free storage as an extra bonus. Finally, once you created an account (a free one is enough), you should be able to share your own affiliate link and that could get you up to max 30GB more free storage, making it a total of 50GB free storage. Disclaimer: I'm a paid user of Filen.

You may also want to consider Ente.io which is another encrypted service focusing this time only on photos. It works real well but you only get 5GB free. Since I barely do any photo myself, that was not my priority but had it be, I would have seriously considered using them (and one of their paid plans) ;)

Thoughts?

Like already mentioned if you care about your photos, or any other file, make backups (no need to use that company's services (even though they work nice) it's just a fine explanation of what a good backup strategy should be).

+1

Not forgetting the 'Fisher Space Pen Company' (the ones that make the ballpoint pen used by NASA astronauts, it works in zero gravity). Their pressurized ink refills are really excellent, also the look of their 'Bullet' pen (considering the name, on could say they're really Americans ;)) is kinda clever but I always considered its ergonomics subpar while writing.

Marcel Bich invented BIC pens and I think it’s still French

Indeed. The PDF I linked, retracing the history of the company is nicely made (detailed enough to get a nice overview edit: but not detailed enough to get too boring ;))

Apple is American FYI. I feel like it’s not mentioned enough.

Sorry, I'm not sure to see what's the link with pens?

Thx, I didn't know about them. I would love to see more people re-discover anything Lino and small press related... Anything that may encourage them express themselves and maybe try fanzines or 'zines', as young people call them nowadays.

In the 80s, I was heavy into that and that was so exciting. Being much older today, I'm obviously not the target audience of most zines anymore but a majority of the ones I've had an opportunity to read felt a lot less exciting to me. Some are true works of art, no discussion about that, but they're also very often so... politically-correct and so self-conscious, so afraid to cross anyone as to not dare much if anything. But like I said, I'm now much older and not the target audience for zines anymore.

+1 to that. I used to use their pencils (graphite) a lot
