There is no best package manager (depends entirely on what you're looking for) but I would +1 Brew.

Keyboard is different but it's just another layout with a few quirks, nothing hard to get used to ;)

On a Mac forget about seriously tweaking the OS to fit your needs (even some basic stuff are not doable, like moving the menubar sitting on the top of the screen). I've been using Apple since the 80s and I've seen it close all the doors to personalization and customization, making harder and harder... Even more so during the last decade.

Apps: there are many amazing apps available for Mac, true gems, but get ready to pay for almost any that is not CLI or provided by Apple (even Safari extensions, most are paid for).

I've switched the other way around, to Linux and I still miss a few Mac apps (mostly, from indie devs). I don't miss macOS itself that much beside Spotlight which after all those many years is still unrivaled be it on Windows and on Linux.

We're now 446 members in !journaling@sh.itjust.works and things start to move a little... kinda, maybe? One person posted a new thread ;)

I have 8 months left (I gave myself a year) to try to revitalize the community, so there is no urgency but I'm surprised to see more people subscribing one week to the next but almost no one posting. That being said, like I said, I have a few months left before I reach my deadline and I keep on posting a new and thematic thread each week... hopefully motivating a few people to participate.

Maybe other type of content would work better to attract more participation, that I can't tell.

Remove social media from their phones.

Agree, for many persons it won't be an easy thing to want to do but the how to do it is so easy that everyone could do it: long press the app and chose Delete/Remove. And it will do them so much good.

Thx for the info. It's also that I don't want to intrude on anyone's privacy—like I would love if by default my online privacy was respected—so I don't want and don't try to know who's coming unless that person wants to reach me, in which case I offer a few ways to do so that are more or less private and/or privacy-friendly.

I used WebP instead of AVIF

It was the other candidate, but on average I did get smaller files with Avif and I went that way.

You might want to consider finding a way to have images be optimized automatically during Hugo’s build, to avoid having to do it manually every time.

That's a good idea. Will try to see what I can do, thx!

We don’t have to resort to JavaScript or server-side scripts to decide which mode to use. Heck, we don’t even need the button anymore!

Thx so much! I will check into that.

Hey I’m old too!

You're experienced. Don't let all those kiddos barely out of their diapers convince you otherwise ;)

I’d guess that the majority of the initial users for this site will also be old folks who remember the old days before the internet was essentially owned by a handful of major corporations with the same handful of billionaires trying to profit off of ever single digital interaction we have with the internet.

Talking kiddos, I'm glad to see quite a few of them trying to rekindle with a non corporate-owned web. That's so positive.I'm all for it!

As I'm all in with seeing them re-appropriating 'zines', btw... Even though I sincerely think most younger people are way too shy nowadays, and so fucking dramatically too politically correct too (like really, for me it's a pain to watch them not dare try anything remotely unsettling/disturbing out of fear of maybe offending someone), still as much as I'm able to I will happily keep on supporting those (too) timid young people trying their hands at publishing indie stuff. Be it zine, music, vids...

That being said, because I must stay true to my old-grumpy posture, I should also say that I'm not a fan of seeing so many of them expecting to get some money for publishing their zines. But well, maybe this time it's officially just me really showing my age and the fact that I'm not completely broke anymore. Back then, we exchanged zines between makers (the excitation of receiving some zine from the USA or Japan, and to send copies of mine there, by snail mail!) but we also forcefully shoved our zines in the hands of any potential reader we came across—just fucking take it! And read it!—way too happy to see someone just have a look at our little trashy baby. At least as a beginner and small fanzine maker... 'established' fanzines were not as willing to distribute freely even back then ;)

Shadowserver visits your site a minimum of 10 times daily, so don’t worry! You have visitors.

Who would have thought so? I have visitors! And not just anyone some serious ones. I should probably tidy up a little more and maybe get some more tasty cookies for them to feel more at home?

More seriously, even though it's not what I would call a surprise I had no idea something like this existed. I'm much more surprised imaging them reading that highly suspicious content I sneak-in between the lines ;)

How are you managing dark mode? When I go to your site it’s white.

I use the Dark Reader Extension on every single website, including mine. I don't want scripts on my website and I could not figure out a way to have a dark/light switcher without any JS) ;)

lmao, my real code that runs for thousands of visitors daily:

I doubt I have such a thing as a single daily visitor (not even myself) but who knows ;)

Nothing about Live Writer? Has it been that well killed that it's not worth mentioning? ;)

I know MS has open sourced it years ago, but I have not seen much of it in quite a few years...
