In some cases, it might be so: most programmers, for example, don't actually need formal education and could be better specialists after self-educating themselves on actual and important things.

I never understood these people. Just keep these things in some standard place. The problem is gone! It shouldn't even be a single place. For example, I keep my keys in different places in different seasons(pockets/bag/etc reasoning).
