In the 3rd edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG, the Net became unusable and history was destroyed due to the mass dissemination of a worm which corrupted all human knowledge

We're rapidly getting to this but shittier, just our luck

Also FDR correctly saw that capitalism needed to be saved from itself and put a generation of administrators and politicians in position of power through the new deal to stave off the collapse, which it did, but then his head exploded and the erosion started back again (but with the working class effectively neutered then)

This, plus the time it would take for signals to travel space at the speed of light, not even mentioning matter at sublight speed, makes it just implausible that we'll ever encounter another civilization (assuming there are some out there)

Plus, I remember reading that the constant expansion of the universe makes it another big factor as we are ever drifting away from most of the rest of the universe, but I'm not sure
