Enter your country for country specific alternatives

Holy shit this addon even provides possibly local alternatives, nice

Sweet! Would be cool if they would adopt this in other countries as well!

Agreed!

We at !buyeuropean@feddit.uk decided to keep the community since it also already has nice posts from e.g. Ukraine and Norway and for the same reasons you mentioned.

Again, it's totally ok to have both communities and we link to !buyfromeu@feddit.org but sadly it seems OP hasn't been online since they went to sleep and haven't been able to contact them about possibly linking to us as well.

But yeah, all good!

Agreed!

And wow, you really put effort into degoogling, damn nice work. I'm bit envious as I'm still trying to get into selfhosting and hope I can join you guys at !selfhosted@lemmy.world once I've gotten bit more into it!

I've occasionally used mapy.cz after a Czech colleague told me about it and I love it, really nice set of tools for web mapping and can also recommend it!

Hey that is actually really interesting! You could even make this its own post in this community!

That makes a lot of sense and actually motivates me to give up grammar for awhile and learn enough words to understand a bit of context while reading. And I think I need to give anki another chance - I felt like it's a bit of a drag but I should try to push myself through and form a habit.

Holy shit, thanks for the motivational boost! Also definitely consider making a post about this. I'm certain some people who are not viewing the community from other than their feeds would be interested as well!

It is not a drop-in replacement for all google maps features, and it is totally okay to continue to use google (I still use it when I actually need something like streetview, pictures, reviews), but for e.g. nature paths (atleast in europe) organic maps has been better. And openstreetmap contributors are quite active in many places I frequent or visit so the information like opening hours are up-to-date mostly.

For public transport I always use the local public transport app, simply because it is more accurate and notifies of issues and I get my tickets anyway via apps.

But yeah I understand you and google maps is not going anywhere, just wanted to notify of an alternative map application :)

Good question! Sadly Organic maps doesn't have any review system.

Such system would take enormous amount of resources to not get flooded with bots, brigading, other issues so I don't think we'll be seeing such feature either unless someone spins up a separate service and allows organic maps to link to it (maybe like fediverse's bookwyrm?).

I actually like that idea! (As a non-dbzer0 user). But a separate community might be too much at this point considering no one has made a comment about it. How about posts in this community with a specific "tag"? [MEGATHREAD] or something?

Just my two cents added to your suggestion.

Wow you went all out, you better join us at !map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz lol

OsmAnd is also cool, but yeah I prefer the simplicity of Organic maps myself and haven't needed much more in my day-to-day life.

Best part is: both are good replacements for google/apple (in the context of getting rid of big tech) and thankfully we can choose!

Ouch... Well you can atleast sleep well knowing you've helped map and upkeep a map of the world. Thank you :)
