It's for sure going to be absolutely amazing! I admire your goal!

Guess it will also open up new doors for socializing and gaming in the end. Pretty neat.

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks! and that's true. I write to reinforce my memory.

100% agree it's inspiring and motivates me to see others at it as well.

Makes me happy to hear that you've gotten back into it despite the hard hit from Covid, welcome back! Hope you are feeling healthier.

That is honestly an impressive amount in a day. I sometimes study for 15 minutes a day just keep the habit. Don't let it overwhelm you. At your own pace and keep it fun.

That's useful info. I personally am fine with that but some friends are doing more than that sometimes.

Although if the service is worth it I'll gladly pay. Guess I can say for sure how I like it once I try.

Ah sorry I think the real term is Daily Quests, like "do 3 perfect lessons today" or "earn 50xp today".

But having an XP and streak system already sounds good! Will have to check it out. Thanks for all the info Auster!

I personally hate the leaderboards on duolingo and try to ignore them entirely as well. But i like the daily "missions" and XP gathering + streak system. Does airlearn have those?

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (8 children)

That sounds quite nice. How is the gamifying aspect? Enough to keep you hooked for daily lessons?

Duo also has a flagging functionality, but this used to be so much better with direct comment section below every answer. Sadly they removed it long time ago.

Good!

And 100%. Motivation while studying is noticable in the progress aswell. Everytime my motivation returns I have these spikes in vocabulary learning.

Wish you a productive week emb.

Thanks for sharing, I'll have to dive into this (looking for possible duolingo alternatives)

Hey Estonians and people living in Estonia, would you mind sharing some Estonian brands/products you like and can recommend to us over at c/buyeuropean?

Tere!

I recently made a similar post over at c/norway (https://sopuli.xyz/post/22971124) and would love to hear some Estonian brands and products recommended by you.

Now there is this one Saku Honey Ale I drank years ago in Tallinn that has stuck in my mind like an ex-partner who I just can't get over of. I tried to search for it last time I visited Tallinn but couldn't find it anymore...

Any brands and product recommendations would be cool!

Edit: sorry for posting in English, I can't speak or write in Estonian and was reading on the sidebar that English posts are welcome.

I personally feel like I understand German-speaking people better the more I study the language.

E.g. my experience was that they are generally good listeners because their language has a sentence structure which forces the listener to wait for the most important information at the end of a sentence.

Bad Denglish to demonstrate:

"I have yesterday night... at the football field.... together with friends ... (dude get to the point) had a beer"

The European Solar Manufacturing Council (ESMC) has submitted its official feedback to the European Commission regarding three critical aspects of the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA): the regulations on renewable energy auctions, the selection criteria for net-zero strategic projects, and the list of essential components for net-zero technologies. ESMC strongly supports the ambition of the NZIA to strengthen European clean energy manufacturing but urges improvements to ensure the effectiveness and resilience of the policy framework.

[...]

ESMC welcomes the European Commission’s proposal to establish pre-qualification and award criteria for renewable energy auctions under NZIA Article 26. These criteria aim to promote European solar PV manufacturing capacity and align with the EU’s target of achieving 30 GW of solar PV production across the full value chain by 2030. However, ESMC highlights several risks and potential loopholes that could undermine these objectives:

  • The proposed criteria must include a robust “Made in Europe” clause to ensure that European manufacturers benefit from the auctions.
  • A comprehensive carbon footprint assessment methodology should be implemented, preventing greenwashing and ensuring transparent sustainability standards.
  • Stronger cybersecurity and data security measures are needed to prevent foreign control over critical solar PV infrastructure.
  • Provisions against the use of forced labour should be explicitly incorporated, with clear references to EU legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the Forced Labour Regulation

StreetComplete makes contributing to OpenStreetMap easy and fun by turning contributions into "quests" on a map for you to complete. No personal information is required, just create an OpenStreetMap account, and start contributing directly in your area!

I tried this out myself, and it is truly fantastic! I had never heard of it, and I'm sure many of you haven't either, so spread the word!

Tip: When entering buildings to ask questions (opening hours, etc.) be ready to explain what OpenStreetMap is :)

Sadly there is no browser view, but they have selection of app stores on their page for the app (and IIRC they are working on a desktop version).

It has routing, searching, more map details (e.g. park benches, trash bins on the map), OSM editing, and pretty slick look in my opinion.

I recently switched to Organic Maps after learning about it here on Lemmy and haven't touched Google Maps as much. I know it is not a perfect 100% replacement, but while it lacks certain things (e.g. public transport, but I use local public transport app anyway for better accuracy), it has so many features google lacks:

  • hiking trail overlay that is more up-to-date
  • stores maps on your phone in vector format (offline use is so much nicer)
  • privacy focused

There is more to this than I know and write here, and probably many here already know about Organic Maps since there was the whole fiasco of google removing this app from play store awhile back, but thought it's cool that the company behind it is in Estonia (man I still remember Skype, thanks Estonia ❤️ I've spent so much time on skype before it was aquired by Microsoft).

Edit to add extra info from website: Company is based in Tallinn, Estonia - Organic Maps OÜ

Yarr me mateys!

~~Arrr, be ye askin' if it be true that the megathread be the community edition o' the thread, and it not be gettin' the proper swabbin' o' the decks, eh? In other words, be the community edition o' the thread bein' left to rot, without any landlubbers to keep it ship-shape?~~

Just wanted say I really appreciate the community here, and love that there is a lemmy community edition of the megathread, but was wondering if it is being maintained? It seems that the last update was in october, while the old megathread upkept by reddit's piracy community seems to be more recent.

I don't know if the old megathread is any better regarding the links, just asking if there are any people with access to community wiki that are keeping an eye on it and updating links?

I'm sorry that I myself am not active editor, I understand that we who are not on dbzer0 lemmy instance don't really have edit access on the wiki.

Arrr, thanks to ye, matey, and may the winds o' fortune blow in yer favor, givin' ye a grand day ahead!

Any experiences? At home or abroad.

My recent experience:

Tried to talk to someone and it was going well until they said 2 sentences really fast and I had no clue what they said.

I must've looked confused, trying to mutter something, ANYTHING! What were the words I'm supposed to say?! I forgot the polite "sorry, could you repeat that" in every language I know.

They caught me off guard, damn it. Then came the killing blow: "English?".

In my moment of weakness I submitted and gave them a nod. From there on we were talking as equals, but my pride had taken a hit. I was defeated. I must go back to my books and duolingo and hide until I have courage again.

(Sorry for the dramatic text, wanted to make a boring interaction sound bit more interesting)

Just wanted to share this since I didn't find anything on lemmy about this. It's a pretty cool open-source project that I got introduced to while investigating a google maps / mapbox open-source alternatives for globe representation on the web.

Sorry if it doesn't fit into this community - didn't find a better community to post this and the sidebar says "OSM related software" posts are ok.

Here is a link to their website with examples: https://www.openglobus.org/
