A very good observation. The user who created bunch of communities that are completely empty also created some communities that will probably never have any real use case. At least I don't believe there will be any use for a dead community named "cocaine".

I'll discuss this, thanks for your input!

Edit: we decided to remove some dead communities entirely and we'll further discuss which ones could be just deleted.

The community on sopuli seems empty, I'll add a redirect. Thanks for the tip!

Done, done, and no problem :) thanks for stepping up!

Very good write up, and I mostly agree.

I'm not part of lemmy development and haven't closely followed Pyfed development but I believe there has been some discussion around this. Especially since some communities that are indexed on sopuli are from instances that have shut down.

The reason why we went with "if anyone wants to pick up a community, here they are" and "we are adding a permanent redirect to abandoned communities" is because we noticed that some communities are indeed low activity but "high" subscriber count. We kinda wanted to offer new users answers for their searches: e.g. if they search for a soccer community - that currently exists but is empty - they find the community with a redirect to football community.

But you are right that this isn't a very good permanent solution and I am also hoping for a native lemmy feature for this problem.

Thanks for the thoughts! We'll have to discuss the possibility of just deleting the empty communities like you suggested.

Edit: we decided to remove some dead communities entirely and we'll further discuss which ones could be just deleted.

If you use the default web-UI you should see them in our instance sidebar on the main page, if you use an app it varies where you see them. But you can always just go to sopuli.xyz via a browser and you should have it right there in the sidebar, below some general info :)

Edit: right below the sopuli mascot image in the sidebar

No, you should be able to moderate via your lemmy.ca account.

There are still a few issues with cross-instance moderation, but these will be fixed soon enough with the new lemmy API v1.

If you have a community in mind let me know :)

And you are a mod now, thanks!

Ah I missed this! Thanks for pointing it out! I'll add a redirect from soccer.

Done. And that's yeah just noticed in your bio! I think they might appreciate a native hanging in the community :)

Edit: no need of course, moderating one community can be quite a task on its own

Ah @DigitalAudio@sopuli.xyz beat you to it, but I'm sure you two could share the moderation if DigitalAudio agrees, what say @DigitalAudio@sopuli.xyz?

But atheism for sure, thanks for stepping up! Could you make a post there so I can appoint you as a mod :)

Edit: yeah out of all of the communities listed lol. Should play lottery tonight

It's more than okay, thanks for stepping up! If you could make a post there I'll appoint you as a mod right after.

I guess it would be similar! Just making sure the community follows sopuli's instance rules at minimum :)

You can of course additionally have your own community rules and enforce them.

Lemm.ee (cartographyanarchy's home instance) is shutting down and I love this community so I'd like to ask the mods of this community to lock it -> redirect the people to a new community on another instance of their choosing.

Locking this community would be nice because even after lemm.ee shuts down this community and its history will be visible on other instances, but if I, for example, post something here afterwards it wont federate since lemm.ee (the community's host instance) no longer takes posts from other instances and federate the new content to others. My new posts will only be visible to my fellow sopulis.

Moved to sundays since it seems saturdays don't work well for people (including me) :)

HELL YEAH!

I was curious about this and found out the team behind the postcards did an AMA on reddit.

I was looking for an image of the CD outfit from last night, came across this mirror article and thought the comment was hilarious.

Couldn't find more recent data. Was talking with a friend recently about their idea of moving to a rural location and we were brainstorming what the benefits and downsides are.
