Absolutely stunning picture. The beads are beautiful, and the prominences are stunning.

The pillars and loops are prominences that result from the ionized solar material following magnetic field lines on the surface. Flares are explosions that occur when those magnetic field lines break and reconnect. So, flares are often seen where prominences are occurring, but they're not the same phenomenon.

I didn't plan to view the eclipse over Potato World, but arriving at the hotel and discovering that it was next door did seem like a sign from the universe.

The thing is, aside from necessities, we have a choice in whether we buy from the big corporations. They don't have a choice in whether they pay the taxes. (Well, they shouldn't at least. But loopholes do be a thing.)

We can out of corporate garbage and choose to support smaller, local businesses at any time.

I own a car. Doesn't mean I know fuck all about making one, or doing anything of value toward humanity with it.

Elon owning toys you like doesn't make him anything but a guy who owns shit for a living.

He's done none of those things. He's just posted the money.

It's a solar prominence. One of the big loopy bois on the Sun's surface.

The government can be efficient and competent if it wants to be. The fact that it isn't when controlled by people who are ideologically opposed to the government overshadowing organizations with a profit motive is not an argument against the government doing things.

It's an argument for the government actually being focused on meeting residents' needs, rather than business owners'.

Ot depends on which colours you mean.

Pictures turned out ok! I should have done a dry run for my totality setup, as I wanted to do some bracketed exposures and assumed my DSLR would let me do that the same way in live display mode as it does in optical viewfinder mode, and it... didn't. But the pictures I did get are a reasonable, if insufficient facsimile of the experience.

As for the real deal... I'll have to update everyone once I've processed it. It was clear as crystal, and a perfect day. I was totally unprepared in every way that mattered. I don't yet have words.

That's how I viewed 2017! Went outside on my lunch break to watch the bananas on the sidewalk while everyone around me went about seemingly totally unaware of what was going on right above and below them

He is! Though I'm not sure how anyone has anything left in the tank after the eclipse for a talk, even from him
