Also, National Post is garbage. They're doing something in the code on the page which makes it stutter as I'm scrolling through.

I just saw the whole bit on conspiracy theories and it made me chuckle at OP's guns comments.

This isn't an article, it's an opinion piece. Why didn't they (National Post) put this out as an article if it isn't just more of their FUD pushing conservative talking points?

There's no info on when the RCMP paper was written, what the agenda is, who wrote it, or how it was discovered to make the ATIP request. It's just a lot of opinion on the economy.

And then OP makes it about guns. If you're going to add commentary at least put it in the comments so it can be voted on separately.

Am I allowed to call them traitors as a Canadian?

If you do end up finding or making a community like the one you want, I suggest you make it so the poster's opinion is added in comments not in the post itself. Otherwise it becomes impossible to distinguish between votes for the article and votes for the comment. It's already bad enough that you can't distinguish between votes for the newsworthiness/quality/source of an article vs the feelings on the content.

Take this article as a case in point: https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/11159076

What are people downvoting? Is the article not worthy of being news? Is the article from a bad news source? Do people dislike what happened in the case? Or are people downvoting the poster's commentary?

In my opinion that article should be sitting at a positive score as news, so it is visible to more people and available for discussion.

I guess that whole "it's mightier than the sword" thing is coming back to bite.

If you're feeling defeated, don't rush into trying to fix it. Sleep on it. The pain will ebb, even just a little, and you won't try to do something hasty or haphazard in frustration.

Then come back to it a day or two later and try what's been suggested (or that's come to mind while you're in the shower, on the can, etc.)

Good luck. We've all been there and just remember that the only people who don't make mistakes are the ones who never try something new.

I disagree. You might as well say you can't upvote or downvote without posting your opinion. Consider the post an upvote for the article.

Some people want to post content, some people want to comment, some people want to vote, some people want to lurk, and some people don't care. Having to publicly state your opinion would create a barrier to posting news articles that would kill the community... There will hardly be anything to comment, vote, or lurk on.

If you want a community where people post news and their opinions - and have to do both - start one, and unsubscribe from the communities you don't like.

Why are people joining .world to begin with?

Because how it works when you first join is very confusing, and why you would choose any particular server is not clear at all.

Also, people want to join something that is bigger and more active because it feels like it would be better (more stable, more content, etc.)

All I see is "****************************?"

What did you type?

Oh damn, I totally read your question wrong. I don't know why looking back at it, but I thought you had asked for helping people specifically once they were here instead of before they got here. Sorry!

You can search under the social services or public benefit categories on canadahelps.org

There are lots of organizations that do various types of work for new Canadians.

Try this to find one in your area: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/explore/charities/category/social-services/sub-category/new-to-canada/

I personally know of MOSAIC in Vancouver that helps immigrants, refugees and other people new to Canada with navigating the quirks of coming here. That includes helping people find work and learn English, among many other things.

Many organizations are faith-based, but I haven't really explored that. I do know many of them don't care what the faith the people they are helping follow.

On a more general note, organizations like the Red Cross will often step in to help refugees, though usually only for a very short (emergency) time.

Good luck, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I might be able to help.
