I lived about 3 miles from my high school

lol. I lived 9 miles away. I think the person who lived furthest away on my bus route was 11 miles. I don't think my bus was the farthest away either.

Not being an asshole. Like you don't need to be nice, you don't need to bend over backwards or go out of your way, just simply don't be a jerk to people. It's easy and free.

What's so funny is I remember an old animation about Naruto fans saying they believed they could run at the speed of light if they did 500 pushups, 500 pull ups, 1000 jumping jacks, and 1000 leg kicks. I think it pre dated one punch man. But the joke was so similar. And I can't find that video anymore. It was an ancient flash video.

Maybe I'm trippin' but it feels like the eyes are wider on the real pic and it sort of conveys more of a "Are you seeing this shit?" Or like a "Really?" Expression, but when I look at each, the eyes are actually wider on the drawn one. Which makes me wonder if we (or at least just me) interpret relative eye sizes differently in cartoons.

Yeah, remember how big of a stink Internet Explorer on Windows was in the 90s? Imagine if Internet Explorer blocked you from downloading other browsers. That's basically what Google Play Store has been doing. Why it's taken this long to get fixed is beyond me, but I'm glad it's happening.

Hits the griddy with Thanos or something, idk, I don't play Fortnite.

Even if they were 18+, I thought the thing was that they were trafficked/raped? Even if an "Epstein girl" was 21, that doesn't necessarily absolve the people that had relations/raped/abused/etc. her. I haven't kept up with the case so don't know the details. Plus after the whole pizza gate and save the children fiasco it can be difficult to really sort out which parts are legitimate and which parts are conspiracy, so I haven't dug much.

I'm only really responding to the "age of consent is a technicality" thing. Not that statutory rape shouldn't be viewed as rape, but I don't think these were scenarios of older people and minors having otherwise "consensual" sex.

What a whiny baby XD

I feel like I'd need to check the wiki less if pacman had flags that made more sense lol. Plus so many variations of commands the wiki warns "this will break your shit".

I really like Arch, I'm using CachyOS, it's been great. But I do miss apt lol. Maybe that's just because I was used to it though. Update and upgrade being two totally different things is also extremely counterintuitive.

This is the type of shit that makes devs not want to support Linux. Respect volunteers.

The beauty of composting is you don't even need to use it. It'll just turn into a dirt pile.

Oh, that's weird, you'd think there'd be a way to tell whatever is on air to download a specific tag. Or like one that downloads the other indirectly. I haven't looked into pkgbuild or aur.

Me, Linux enthusiast, software engineer, after spending an hour trying to get some radio manufacturer's software to cooperate with Wine: Honey, can I borrow your laptop?

I'm sorry, Mr. Torvalds! Forgive me!

I'm still pretty new to radio stuff and still learning. I have my technician license and have made a handful of contacts. For Christmas I got the RTL-SDR. It has a warning saying "DO NOT use near strong transmitters. Max input: +10 dBm." I am having difficulty understanding exactly what that means and whether I can use my handheld radios near it. These are cheap ~5W radios.

I'm curious about the practical and theoretical both, here. So a simple yes-or-no would be helpful, but I'd also like to know the math.

  • Right now, I have a vertical half wave dipole (each leg is 48.8 cm, which I believe makes this a half wave dipole antenna for 146 MHz?) attached to my RTL-SDR. I've been trying to understand gain, but it seems tricky to find and understand the charts. This antenna came with the RTL-SDR, but it's telescoping and that's the length I have it at.
  • My radio is 5W and uses a knockoff NA-771 type antenna.

I don't have any other sort of tool to measure the output of my handheld radio. I am curious how close I can be to the RTL-SDR antenna when transmitting. I am also curious if I can transmit near the RTL-SDR when there is no antenna attached (I assume I can be a lot closer, but I still don't know how close).

Mostly, I don't want to break a new toy lol.

I'm not sure if this is a weird bug with the search or there's something weird in the database. It's also odd that they show different subscriber counts. Both link to !til@lemmy.world.

Edit: This is related to a known problem as Ategon mentioned. Disregard! :)

Update: Turns out I was too concerned. The manual actually says to use the top rack.

Screenshot of my manual saying to use the top rack of the dishwasher.

UPDATE: Stopping and reopening the app fixes this. It needs to actually stop though, you can't just switch apps and reopen. Either wait for it to close on its own or force stop. I did not try the main menu method as suggested, though. It may be easier.

For context, "no hello website" is a term I'm using to describe websites like https://nohello.com/. The gist is that it's trying to get people to no only say "hello" but also ask whatever it is they're trying to ask you about. (In my opinion, this can even extend to generic conversations, like "hey, how are you?" versus just "hey!")

The problem is, many of these websites seem pretty rude. At the end of the day, I don't think it's possible to make one not seem at least a little rude because telling someone not to say hello just sounds rude lol. That said, even my favorite one (https://nohello.club/) has phrases like

  1. Unnecessary pleasantries
  2. useless phrase like "Hello"

But I like it because it doesn't say things like this that the original http://nohello.com/ says

please be prepared to be ignored if you only say "Hello!".

Some context, I'm not necessarily looking to include this on any corporate messaging app bio (unless it was 100% polite, which as I said I don't find possible). But the closer to something that polite, the more useful I think it is.

There is a promotion for new hams to get the Explorer QRZ-1 for $22 (along with some software and a cable, but I already have a cable and CHIRP is free). It is normally $60. Is this a good deal? Is this radio worthwhile?

I currently have a Baofeng UV-5R (Baofeng #1 radio! Wooo!) and a TIDRADIO TD-H3. I haven't really made contacts with either and don't know how well they perform. Is this QRZ-1 substantially better?

How poorly would an attic mounted antenna perform? Obviously worse than something outside, I'm guessing, but how much worse?

My office has one of those "side attics." It has a half sized door. Mounting a long antenna in there is very tempting because of how much easier it would be than doing anything outside. It's on the second floor as well.

I hear that a lot but, how bad is it really? Does it affect you (if you use Debian)? Aren't there ways to install newer versions of most things that actually matter?

Two different webs very close together. I like to imagine they'd chat about their days of they could!
