I don't like her either, but I would say that's not because Muldaur is a bad actress, or because she was a bad character.

For example, her being a dick to Data really helped his character growth. She was abrasive but it really helped TNG grow its beard.

You’ll start with millions of climate refugees

Millions? If only.

I've seen estimates which say at least a billion by 2050:

Given this is a bethesda game, I look forward to playing it a year from now, when the modding community has perfected and expanded it. I'm sure it'll be truly awesome by then, it'll run great on my older pc, and thanks to the community I'll have years of fun. Just like happened with the newer non-online Fallout games and Skyrim.

Bethesda makes diamond tier games. They just need polishing.

Thank you to those who pre-ordered or bought on day 1, for subsidising us patient gamers so we can have thousands of hours of fun for less than the price of a trip to McDonalds.

Some of it is also the nature of the fediverse. For example, you'll sometimes see people complaining about having to see the same story multiple times.

The exact same article will be posted on technology@lemmy.ml, technology@lemmy.world, technology@beehaw.org, etc. etc. Or you won't get to see stories depending on which instance you're using, because server A has chosen not to (no longer) federate with server B, which means you need an account with multiple networks to see the whole fediverse, despite the fediverse supposedly being interconnected.

That's off-putting to many users, but I don't know if there's a way to change that easily, because these kinds of things are arguably part and parcel of the fediverse.

Yes. The terms were harsh, but ultimately both parties agreed to them. A negotiated settlement.

Note also how the reality is slightly more nuanced. For example, Hirohito remained in power and all members of the Imperial House were spared criminal prosecution. That was an unfortunate but necessary compromise. If the world was fair, they'd have hanged them all, just like much of the Nazi establishment.

This also why at one point Japanese officials, basing themselves on the Potsdam Declaration, argued to MacArthur that Japan's surrender had in fact been contractual and conditional. Obviously he told them to go fuck themselves, and because the country was by now occupied, there wasn't exactly much they could do about it.

It's unfortunate, but this is almost certainly what will happen with Russia. A ceasefire will be agreed under conditions both parties accept. The better Ukraine does, the worse the conditions will be that Russia is forced to accept. With a bit of luck, the conditions will be so bad that Putin falls out of a window and is replaced with someone slightly more sane.

Once the ink is dry, the west will hopefully arm Ukraine to the gills, perhaps institute a no fly zone, give them NATO membership or something approaching it, etc. etc.

But before that happens there will still need to agree to a ceasefire, hence all wars end with a negotiated settlement, unless you engage in genocide.

You don't. It's not your fault. You should be able to post it in multiple magazines/instances.

It's due to the nature of the fediverse that some of us get to see the same story multiple times.

This is a bit of a tangent, but the damage that bigotry has done to human progress is staggering. The scientist leading the team is apparently a black Zimbabwean woman. Not so long ago, it would have been impossible for someone like that to lead a team, and that immense talent would have gone entirely to waste.

Think of all the highly intelligent people who were unable to go to university or perform to the best of their abilities because some racist moron assumed they were too stupid. Think of all the women who are scared off pursuing a scientific career to sexist BS.

Think how (overeducated) morons still run entire countries or huge companies, thanks to privilege they don't deserve, while at least one of the cleaners is twice as smart and a better human being than they'll ever be.

What gives me some hope, is that it's in (part of) the republican establishment's interest for Trump to go to jail.

That way it becomes very hard for him still to run, he can be replaced by someone more controllable/sensible, but his 'persecution' can be used as a symbol to increase turnout of conservative voters.

The sick man of Europe.

This isn't a recent thing. Arguably the 90s and early 2000s were just a blip in the UK's long-term post-imperial decline.

The real shame is that the UK is still in denial about that decline, rather than accepting the truth of it, and ensuring a soft landing.

Bit like how the Palace of Westminster is urgently in need of renovation, but because it'll cost too much, and because Britain is still too attached to symbols of a glory age that's long gone, MPs keep kicking the can down the road rather than doing what's necessary to prevent a catastrophic failure.

Not that I know of, which is annoying.

To be clear, it's not your fault that discussion of news is spread across multiple magazines, but that doesn't change the fact that many of us end up seeing the same story 10 times rather than having it posted on one single large magazine/community.

It doesn't matter that Russia's word can't be trusted.

Push Russia back to the border so that their invasion isn't rewarded, negotiate a ceasefire, then almost immediately make Ukraine a (defacto) NATO member, protect their airspace, no fly zone, arm them to the teeth.

The Russians are far better at keeping their word, when they know that they are weak, and that it benefits them.

In other words, even Zelensky knows there'll have to be negotiations somewhere down the line.

It's just a question of when and under which circumstances.

It's in Ukraine and Europe's interests, that these negotiations occur when Russia has been pushed back to the border. Otherwise they'll have been rewarded for their military adventurism.

And obviously Russia can't be trusted, so the moment a cease fire is signed, it's imperative that Ukraine gets defacto NATO membership (or something approaching it) and is armed to the teeth.
