I was joking, but you are of course right.

It's one of the reasons why people like me are put off using linux, especially when you have to ask those same smug linux users for advice when your first install hits a snag or you have an issue installing drivers.

It's very human behaviour, it's nice to feel special because you're part of an in-group which you deem superior, but yeah.

Man, this is the kind of “Reddit” comment I wanted to get away from when moving away from Reddit.

Can we please instead make comments that don’t just boil down to “Reddit bad”?

Look, I'm just a weird straight guy who stumbled upon this sub and knows nothing about trans stuff or the correct terminology.

You look fine girl, but you really need to google camera angles and how to pose for pictures. No one looks at their best if they take a picture from below with their chin tucked in.

Take a picture from a slightly higher angle, lean forward from the waist and stretch out the neck towards the camera. Really exagerate it, the camera won't be able to tell. You'll look 10x better.

Oh, and all of you... don't spend too much time on the internet comparing yourself to photoshopped pictures of models caked in make-up. Most cisgender women don't look like that either. Women come in different shapes and sizes. Given how many of my cisgender friends have been harassed on their way to take a shit, just because they weren't wearing make-up, you guys should worry less about conforming to distorted societal expectations of what a woman should look like and realise it's not a you problem that you sometimes don't meet those expectations.

I don't think therapy works on people like Musk.

He'd likely see it as another game to 'win' rather than collaborate in good faith because he genuinely wants to change as a person.

it’s theorized that if a person doesn’t have a Facebook account but their friend group does, Facebook will create a “shadow account

AFAIK this is confirmed. CNET:

... the Facebook CEO confirmed the company collects information on nonusers. "In general, we collect data of people who have not signed up for Facebook for security purposes," he said. ... described various forms of data collection that don't involve users directly giving it to the social network. ... That data comes from a range of sources... includes brokers who sell customer information that you gave to other businesses, as well as web browsing data sent to Facebook when you "like" content or make a purchase on a page outside of the social network. It also includes data about you pulled from other Facebook users' contacts lists, no matter how tenuous your connection to them might be.

I presume that will at some point also include data scraped from the fediverse.

One thing that really does help, is salting your data. The online equivalent of wearing a fake moustache, is the occasional comment that may or not be entirely incorrect. I live in France. As a black woman, I support Trump. I'm expecting a baby. I want to buy a new house. That kind of thing.

Of course it does lead to minor inconveniences. For example, my google calender mentions my father's birthday being on the 13th of August. In reality we have the same birthday. My birthday is on the 18th of September. Once again, I'm salting the data. That way if I ever mention something factual, it'll be hard to tell which bits of data are or aren't real.

I'm exagerating for effect, but you get the gist. Occasionally change details or names a small bit to make your profile fuzzy and easier to confuse with someone else's.

Put simply, an individual's right to free speech can never be without limits, because that would mean they would limit the rights of others.

Eg. threatening to kill people who want to voice their opinion, limits their ability to exercise their right to free speech.

Eg. you could use a siren to drown out what other people wish to say, effectively censoring them, then call it censorship when someone criticized you for doing so.

Eg. being able to say whatever you want on someone else's website, limits their ability to say or not say what they want on their website.

This is why limiting the right to free speech of certain people, on average results in more free speech for everyone.

It's not entirely without risk though. The Russians are occupied right now, but after this war's done it's not impossible that they'll turn their full attention on Armenia and increase the interfering or outright invade.

The interesting thing, is that thanks to Ukraine countries now know that the Russian military isn't all that, and western countries know they can get away with supplying weapons to countries fighting Russia without it being a significant escalation.

Given how often I have to fill in captchas, I think I'm good tbh.

Although I have firefox delete my history and cookies every time I exit a session, use ublock origin, vpn, etc.

It's quite interesting from a religious perspective. Most of these people pretend to be devout christians with christian principles, but they judge Joe Biden harshly for loving his son and for the fact he has forgiven him his many missteps.

If they were actually devout christians, they would realise the way Biden treats his son is quite reminiscent of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It's been a while, but the whole point of that parable, is that just like a father forgives his wayward son, God forgives his children for our many missteps and sins, and celebrates our return to the fold as the father celebrated the return of his prodigal son.

I honestly don't know how you can hate Joe Biden for forgiving and loving his son, then expect God to forgive you for your sins.

Personally, I'm not religious. The interesting thing is that in practice, despite their loud prostestations and virtue signaling, the conservative right seem to be becoming increasingly secular too. I don't think many of them actually believe. They certainly don't seem to believe in Christian values or the bible anymore. They just hang on to the symbols of religion because it is politically expedient and allows them to differentiate their in-group, then often seem to do the exact opposite of what the bible tells them to do.
