At best, they're blind to it. Their education never really got into how awful it was to be a worker in the industrial revolution. Or they think it was all exaggerated for books.
At worst, they're entirely aware of it, but insist it was a better quality of life than what working-class people had before the industrial revolution, thereby justifying the horrifying conditions.

TBF I was on the street a couple summers ago and a guy rolls by in a car bumping QOTSA and I thought "Who's the cool guy bumping some Queens?" and I looked over and it was a dad.

"TV Shitposting" was actually sorta big in the late 60s-Early 70s. One of the prevailing philosophies in comedy was 'Throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.' You can see this in Mel Brooks, Laugh-In, Jonathan Winters, and even The Muppets to a degree. The beauty of this philosophy is that it didn't really matter if you didn't get a given joke (or just didn't find it funny) because the next joke was less than a second later.
