Canada isn't necessarily great either, and European grocery stores are full of "foods" containing the same cursed ingredients. There's a big difference in volume of crap though, and alternatives are much more accessible than they are in the US.

It's just become a lot more expensive than it used to be, and the environmentalist/health aspects of it might play a small part in this, too.

The French word is "dinde", and the ethmology IIRC is "from India" (d'Inde)

Monopolists don't necessary care about the particular supply their smaller competitors can offer. They just want to control supply in general and make it so that buyers have no alternative.
