Song Created in 1993-2000, released in 2000 under the Tangents Album. The Tea Party was formed in Windsor, Ontario. Active in the 90s, and since reformed in the 2010s, they are still active and releasing music.

Last song I'm posting for the night! I planned on stopping sooner but got excited when I realized The Tea Party is actually from my home city of Windsor! I had no idea. Would explain why I recognize all of their songs, I must've heard them a couple hundred times over the radio.

I guess I kind of have a thing for every variation of rock music, huh?

Created in 1985 by Scottish-Canadian Lawrence Gowan. Gowan was born in Scotland, but immigrated to Scarborough Ontario when he was younger. Gowan's career is mostly entirely contained within Canada, with most popular being in Toronto, the epicenter of his career. As of this post, 1/10 of Gowan's 101k monthly listeners are from Toronto.

Made in 2003 in the Truthfully Truthfully album. Joel Plaskett is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and his music often makes references to his home city.

Joel Plaskett has a strong history of celebrating Canadian music. His music itself is great, but look into his strong advocacy of Canadian Musicians, and his criticisms of bands that go on to play more in other countries than Canada itself.

Made in 1993. Band is based from Toronto. Still releasing music to this day albeit with different band members.

"Sometimes it's wise To know which way the gun is pointing Before you yell, "I see the whites of their eyes"

Aside from being quite catchy and pleasant to listen to, the lyrics are quite heartfelt and clever. Big fan of this band's pieces.

Released July 2000, still relevant.

"Officers arrested a woman in connection with the incident at a residence in the 1100 block of Bruce Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday, police said.

The dog was removed from the home and turned over to the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the humane society said the dog "has been thoroughly examined by our medical team and is in good condition.

'While he is bright and alert, he is understandably scared and will need time to adjust,' the post said. 'At this time, he is not available for adoption or foster care.'"

Disgusting lack of empathy, but I am grateful for swift action by the Windsor Police and the empathy shown by the Humane Society and all those who reported the video. The Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre phone number is 1-833-9ANIMAL. Please report cases of animal abuse or neglect.

What happened:

"City staff approved spending hundreds of thousands on American-made outdoor furniture as part of the $15.4 million outdoor ice rink downtown days after being asked to prioritize Canadian-made goods during an ongoing trade war.

The furniture will cost taxpayers up to $285,957.21 for 28 seasonal outdoor metal tables, 18 table-mounted metal umbrellas and 10 garbage receptacles.

That's before taxes, according to a city document."

To be faaaair:

"It's not clear if the city considered any Canadian companies as part of the selecting process for the outdoor furniture.

Project administrator Graziano Nazzani wrote in a report that these companies were selected because the items would match what's in other parks, will be familiar to staff who maintain the furniture and because the city already has replacement parts on hand."

My opinion: Very much against the sentiment of the times, and a bit of a slap in the face for a city proud of its manufacturing capabilities. I think keeping it domestic, or even local, would have been the better move, especially considering how expensive the American made items were anyways!

2025 FEDERAL ELECTION RESULTS FOR WINDSOR & ESSEX COUNTY

Conservatives have won every district with incumbents keeping a larger lead from 2021, and new CONs winning from a split vote and the other within a few hundreds of votes. Thank you to everyone who voted!

CON Kathy Borreli - 45.7% (31.6k votes) (+20.1%)

NDP Alex Ilijoski - 6.3% ( 4.3k votes) (-24.4%)

Chatham Kent Leamington -

CON Dave Epp - 57.6% (40.2k votes)* (+16.7%)

LIB Keith Pickard - 35.8% (25.0k votes) (+ 7.2%)

NDP Seamus Fleming - 4.1% ( 2.8k votes) (-10.5%)

Tight election! Overall, voter turnout beat 2021 by quite a bit! We are seeing an overall trend of a collapse of NDP popular support in line with the national trends, likely a reflection of strategic voting and disillusionment with NDP party leadership. We are also seeing the PPC being reduced to a non-factor of a party, also in line with national trends. Liberals overall appreciated a increase in total votes compared to 2021, but so did the conservatives -- and much more so!

Keep discourse in the comments civil. We are all Canadians here.

Lmao if I knew it was blocked in Canada I'd have gotten a different link, my bad.

Dude commented within 1 minute of me posting this too.

I agree. I think games fall into the realm of art, and much in the same way I might visit a Canadian history museum to see our unique historic cultural artefacts, or a modern art gallery featuring Canadian artists, I am also interested in seeing what Canadian gamedevs are brewing up. We absolutely have a respectable gamedev scene in Canada and I think that is worth celebrating and discovering. Same for any other country too. It's a exploration of the unique cultural fingerprint we leave in the things we create. VERY different from the concept of national exceptionalism -- a game/thing/person being Canadian does not make it inherently superior. It'd be silly to think that, and I'd never suggest so.

I'm returning back to Canada in 2 months and you bet your ass this will be blasting during the drive up. I don't plan on living anywhere else for the rest of my life.

That is hard to quantify and verify, as most of these studios are privately owned and not required to publicly disclose that type of information.

I'd agree this would be the way, if only we could actually verify this. I think a physical studio/space in Canada is the best compromise because that is something we can actually verify with simple online sleuthing. Remote work is only increasing, and does make this complicated.

There are two communities I would really like to see some traffic driven to:

!maplemusic@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian music

!givergaming@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian games, gamedevs and studios

I think these would be an easy add to the Canadian Social / Culture section.

[–] GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Chill, it's not meant to be that deep.

This is a community that seeks to celebrate and spread word of Canadian games and studios. I figured it would be nice to have a discussion and come to some kind of conclusion on how we determine if a game or studio is Canadian. Nothing more, nothing less. Any political commentary beyond that can be had in other more relevant communities.

For a gamedev, an individual person? Just being Canadian, I suppose. For a studio? I think it should be by being based in Canada, even if it is owned by a larger entity based elsewhere (Such as the Ubisoft Montreal branch) For the game itself? Made by a Canadian studio.

[–] GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

I took the initiative and actually emailed their support email address and asked them how much of the company is based in Canada. Hopefully I hear from them soon!

I hope it is not a situation where the studio just happened to be founded/owned by a Canadian. A Canadian owning a company does not make it a Canadian company -- by that logic, twitter/x is a Canadian company.

I think this community should decide what exactly constitutes a "Canadian Game" or Studio.

Fair -- it is a bit of a grey area in that regard. I've been playing Rimworld for about 5 years now, and can attest that a large majority of the Game's creative direction is from Tynan himself. The wikipedia article for Rimworld elaborates on the development history of Rimworld a bit more, and seem to imply it was at least originally created in Canada, back when it was just Tynan and a few other devs.

Could be worth directly asking the studio how Canadian they are or consider themselves to be. They are rather active with the community with a active community engagement person on the subreddit.

Tynan Sylvester / Ludeon Studios, creator of Rimworld. Based in Ottawa (or that is where he lives according to his LinkedIn atleast.

Well, the idea is to make the roads safer -- not turn a profit. If people stop speeding so much, they can always take them down again. 6 a day seems like a very achievable number for a long time though.

If the streets are safer for it, then its a worthwhile investment. Especially if you consider the alternative of enforcement would be hiring another police officer, which undoubtably would cost more and be limited in their ability to catch every person speeding. Suppose an argument could be made to say these cameras are taking police officer's jobs, but frankly I think traffic enforcement should be below them, and let them focus on more real crimes going on.

It seems really promising. Even my mother who voted MAGA in America really likes Carney. He is absolutely swaying many conservatives with how comically overqualified he is for the position.

[–] GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 months ago

As fun as that would be, I don't think it would be productive. It is to everyone's benefit that Canada and the US remains friends, but we need to start imagining a world where that isn't possible anymore.

They don't ship to the US, bummer. I'll have to pick some up once I am back to living in Canada.
