"The Optimist Club of South Windsor will host its second Picnic in the Park event of the summer, combining fun and fellowship with a focused effort to support Drouillard Place and Matthew House Windsor.

The event will take place on Sunday, July 27th, from 12:00pm to 2:00pmat Mic Mac Park – Pavilion 6."

"'This isn’t just about hot dogs and fun,' said a spokesperson for the Optimist Club. 'This is about showing up for our neighbours and supporting the amazing work of Drouillard Place and Matthew House Windsor — organizations that make a real difference every single day.'

Drouillard Place provides services and outreach to support children, youth, and families in Windsor’s east end. Matthew House Windsor offers shelter and essential resources for refugee claimants and displaced individuals as they rebuild their lives in Canada."

Glad to see some good work being put in to make Windsor a better and more accommodating place. If anyone has some old (but not expired!) cans or dry goods to spare, go visit the park tomorrow drop it off, and grab yourself a hotdog while you can.

Just curious, I don't know if this feature would be in fedecans or lemmy's court to implement. I just know that it would be quite helpful to further develop communities.

If so, I hope it works with old.lemmy. I can't stand any other formats and it already frustrates me that certain features don't work with this format.

Love this song so much, never been a big fan of any of his other music aside from Rock N'Roll Duty though

According to the article its twofold: they built more housing, and there are indeed less international students arriving into the country due to changes in federal policy.

Average rent has fallen nationally for 9 months straight now.

All just in time for me to begin renting my first apartment! Lucky me. I think Toronto will still be a bit out of reach for my wallet though...

I went ahead and updated the sidebar to showcase the news options for windsor and the ultimate nationality of their ownership.

I don't disagree, but I'm not familiar with alternatives for Windsor. It always pissed me off that they couldn't even spring for the .ca in the website url.

I'll look into alternatives to add variety though, there does actually be a few options.

"Less foreign students and more residential units in the local marketplace means Windsor area renters are getting cost-of-living relief. Article content

“There’s just an overwhelming inventory. It’s almost a renters’ market,” said Goldmar Property Management owner Patrice Surette.

“What we’re seeing is tons of listings and they’re not moving as quickly,” adds Dan Gemus, co-owner of Dan Gemus Real Estate Team."

"Surette describes the past year not so much as a price decline as a market adjustment.

“Maybe the market was overly inflated, but the market is coming back to where the rents should be,” Surette told the Star. “It’s great for tenants."

Looks promising! Lower rents is better for everyone.

Vilain Pingouin -- meaning Ugly Penguin in English, is a Quebecois rock band that has been active ever since 1986. Originally playing in English rock bands, the singer/guitarist Rudy Caya and the drummer Michel Vaillancourt wish to expand into more franophone music, originally forming a band called "Les Taches", until they expanded the band more and called themselves Vilain Pingouin.

Information sourced from the bands wikipedia page. Further information from the band itself it available on their website, including oncoming tour dates and merch!

As someone learning french, I must say this band is quite nice. The music is quite nice, and the lyrics are clearly pronounced well enough that I can follow along without much difficulty.

Junkhouse was a considerable force in the 1980s-1990s Canadian alternative rock scene, but disbanded in 1998, but have been sporadically active throughout the last few decades. Wikipedia has them listed as currently active, although there has not been any new songs since 1998.

A good portion of the band has passed away. In a most Canadian fashion, the second guitarist Dan Aachen actually passed away from a heart attack while playing hockey.

See Spot Run is from Montreal, Quebec. Their music features both French and English lyrics/titles, from all throughout their over 3 decades of music making -- since 1993.

The band is seemingly still active, but their last new music release was 9 years ago, in 2016.

Japanese jazz is some great stuff. Casiopea is one of the iconics, but honestly lots of other great Japanese jazz/jazz fusion artists out there.

Looked into it on their facebook, I believe they are from the Niagara region! I was curious which border city they were from, being from Windsor myself, which I would consider the border city of Canada lol

Ooooooh I like this one. I fucking love jazz and anything jazz derivative.

Citizenfreak is a super good website! I'll add it to the sidebar.

I'll definitely keep theming in mind, but I worry it may be a bit early in the communities lifespan to try and do stuff like that. "Live and let live" seems to be the best way to prop up a new community, focusing on growth more than anything.

I already consider it a great success already that I'm not the sole poster in this community now lol

Dan rolls is part of the Canadian coin collecting community. He regularly does live streams on youtube showing him coin hunting (opening up rolls of coins from the bank in hopes of finding rare coins) and metal detecting around Canada, in I believe the Niagara region of Ontario.

You can talk to Dan as well as other passionate coin collectors in the very friendly and active canadian coin collectors discord! You can find their subreddit and the discord link at r/CanadianCoins. Foreign coin collectors are allowed into the discord -- a significant number of the community is actually foreign!

If you like homesteading, DIY repairing, and the beautiful scenic views of the East coast, you'll likely enjoy this channel! As per the title, the channel now focuses on the repairing of an off grid house on an island off the coast of Newfoundland. The older videos feature Matty Clarke doing outdoors videos in places all across Canada, but has since chosen to settle down on the island with his wife Kelly Clarke. Together, the two regularly post videos about their time fixing up the homestead.

sundayclub is another up and coming Canadian band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is their first song with Paper Bag Records, with the primary artists being Courtney Carmichael and Nikki St. Pierre.

Being very very new, you can can find more info about them their social links in the description of their youtube video.

Looking to make a theme with my posts rather than haphazardly posting random songs, I think for today I'm going to focus on new music rather than posting to oldies and well known songs.

Anyone think that making themed days/weeks/months would be fun? I think something simple like "New Music Monday" could be cool.

This is a newer and upcoming Canadian band from Montreal! They are about to drop their first full length album in two days on the 11th of July. Learn more about them at https://www.mothland.com/karma-glider.

Apologies for the delay in posts! I just moved back home to Canada and was busy getting into the grove of life here but things are settling down and I will have free time to make more posts! I really appreciate everyone that kept this and my other communities active while I was away for a bit.

It's good to be back home in Canada!

Canada's Really Big is from Arrogant Worms' 1997 album Live Bait, released in 1997. The band is from Kingston, Ontario, and is still active with all of its original band members! Their songs are focused on comedy with a focus on Canadian topics.

Mother Mother just constantly puts out bangers. Definitely one of the most unique bands out there!

I agree that having the government do it would be ideal, though a government could fumble it just as bad or worse than any private company. I'll take a flawed domestic starlink/rocket launches over none at all. Especially if the alternative means relying on America/Musk even more.

I don't know about the toxins from launches, but I think it must be a drop in the bucket compared to air travel, cars, and dirty electricty generation. If that is what it takes to get us space infrastructure, I'd call that the cost of doing business. I also have faith that there can be reasonable way to mitigate the damage such as choice of where they are launched and further developing the technology. Much of the tech has gone largely unchanged from the moon landing era, afaik.

You are really good at taking the good and the bad, but throwing away the good so you only have the bad.

These guys have given us no reason to believe that they will be anything like Musk. There are hundreds and thousands of private companies that operate within the law and/or ethically in general. Other people have already given you many reasons why being able to do our own domestic (albeit private) rocket launches is extremely beneficial. Such as doing our own starlink instead of using Musks'.

I'm pretty anti-capitalist and a Musk-hater as they come too, but I feel you are just speaking from a place of anger, not reason. Even if it were the government doing this, space infrastructure development is just as important for Canadian citizens as more dental coverage and overhauling public transit.
