I strongly suspect Brenda will, in fact, still “have a problem” with brown people even if they speak perfect “American” English

He’s definitely saying better things than Biden (and every Senate democrat, too). I actually think this highlights that Biden will not be any better than Trump on Gaza. Because the Biden admin is maximally supporting Israel other than using the actual US military (overtly) to support Israel. Like, it’s not mathematically possible to be more supportive of the genocide other than to land some Seals in Rafah and have them join in on the genocide. Biden has his foot on the gas in all other areas: US military equipment is pouring into Israel, US diplomats are providing diplomatic cover to Israel at the UN and ICJ, and Biden is telling Netanyahu to ease up on the genocide with same level of conviction my aunt does when she tells us she doesn’t want any rhubarb pie after dinner this time.
I don’t see Biden or Trump going that last step and getting the US military directly involved. That is the only way the US could be even more of a partner in the genocide.
Edit: to clarify, my aunt really loves rhubarb pie.
Like, am I shooting myself in the foot by not investing spare money?
1,000% No. I’m telling you from someone who used to work in that industry, if you try to play the market you might as well just go to the roulette wheel, you might have better odds and at least that’s fun. I could go into all math and financial theory if you want, but the reality is that most of the people who devote their lives to this stuff aren’t making any more money than they would just putting everything in an index fund.
That said, if you have money set aside and you don’t need it until many years in the future, I mean as long as global capitalism doesn’t collapse there’s a good chance that by investing in broad passive index funds, you’ll do better than having your money in a checking account. But that’s on a long time horizon and it assumes you won’t need this money if you lose your job or something (because the worst investing you can do is to buy in conditions as they are now, the market goes down, you lose your job and need the money so you sell those index funds when they were low after you bought high.
You just reminded me of Neo Geo. The whole idea of that console was that you were getting the direct from the arcade experience.
IIRC the console cost $700 and the game cartridges were $200 each… in early 90s dollars.
$200 for a single game, too. It wasn’t a cart that had like multiple games on it or something.
I do think Tolkien tried (mostly successfully) to tell LotR free from allegory. That was important to him since the point was to tell the story of Middle Earth on its own merits as a story. But it definitely isn’t free from ideology, and I don’t think even Tolkien would disagree with that.
Numbers 2, 3, and 4 wouldn’t even cost the US government or Americans anything. Literally just “stop being assholes to Cubans, Venezuelans, and Mexicans living in the US” and of course the US will reject this.
Good point.
Remember too, most straight Democrats over 50 or 60 (so pretty much all of them in power) spent a good part of their lives thinking gay or trans people to be “icky” or people who it’s ok making jokes about and dehumanize. I mean I was around in the 90s, this wasn’t true for all of them but most Democrat-aligned folks would say pretty awful shit about gay people but then just tack on a “yeah but if they want to love whoever they want to that’s fine I guess”.
Look at Joe Biden. You think that guy, on a personal level, actually gives a shit about LGBTQ people? Do you think in his heart, he is bothered when trans people are denied basic rights? I have a pretty good idea what Biden thinks about trans people inside his own head - and if you could actually type it up and let everyone see it, it would be horrific.
You think that guy is gonna lift a finger to actually help LGBTQ people in the US? That’s literally the only card these libs try to play - that by not voting Biden we are harming LGBTQ folks. But we already have his track record - not just as president, but his senate career. LGBTQ people will not be any more safe in 2028 with Biden as president than Trump.
I’ve had a decently long career in the corporate world. It’s definitely true that the smartest and most hard working people aren’t necessarily making the most money. If I could identify one characteristic of what seems to get people promoted and into higher paying jobs, it tends to be the ability to exert your will on others. It’s possible to do this without being a bully, but it’s pretty rare.
But the idea that capitalism a meritocracy where the smartest and hardest working people earn the most is definitely bunk.
I can see why our Arab and Arabic-speaking comrades have so much respect for Nasrallah. He is a very compelling speaker, I have really enjoyed reading what he has to say these last few months.
The author literally cites just like 4 TikTok accounts and that’s all her evidence. One person on TikTok said “Gen Alpha is just so weird” and takes that as some truism (which, by the way, we had plenty of skibidi toilet type weird shit that grown ups didn’t understand when I was a kid). It’s like those articles that say “People are getting mad about XYZ”, and the article just says “It appears that a lot of people are upset about XYZ” and then it just gives 5 screen shots from random twitter users with 200 followers as “evidence”.
Lazy journalism at its finest. Didn’t know getting a job with the paper in the second largest market in the US was that easy.
