A local park ranger I know likes to remark that our state tree is a grass. (I'm in Florida.)

But I'd say that's also inaccurate. IMO, grasses are in the family Poaceae, and palms are in the family Arecaceae. I guess one could remark that our state tree is a commelinid...but I don't think tourists would get as much of a kick out of that.

I think it's arguable that "tree" is just a term for a growth habit rather than anything really taxonomically meaningful.

How many social credit points do I lose if I refer to bamboo products as "wood" outside of botany nerd circles?

Isn't that just "hosed"?

"Frickin' beautiful."

I wrote up a comment to a post on Mander, and there shouldn't be any blocks (unless for some reason I'm blocked from /c/palaeoecology for some reason which I see why I would be but please inform me if this is the case), yet when I click the Reply button to post my comment the little spinny animation never ends and if I refresh the page my comment is absent.

(This is my first time cross-posting something -- please advise me if I've done anything wrong!)

(crossposter's comment: Personally I suggest checking out the MIT Tech Review article on this first, which gives useful context.)

Taking rock (Olivine) and dumping it on the beach, so that the waves break it down, adjust ocean pH and mineralize the CO₂.

Was checking out the various communities, deciding which ones to subscribe to, and found the SpaceEngine community. Never even heard of this software (does it count as a game?) before but it is super neat (and also available DRM-free on GOG).

Mander, and the threadiverse more broadly, is cool.

Hello! This is my first time using the "threadiverse". I joined this instance because there's a lot of interesting stuff going on on Lemmy and Kbin. I heard about this part of the fediverse only recently, mainly coinciding with the controversy on Reddit, though I've been using the fediverse since even before Twitter got stupid.

Like my profile suggests, I'm into environmental science and policy issues, and have gotten myself sucked into some local native plant groups and doing wildlife observation stuff. I'm also a musician, and I enjoy videogames as well, mainly older ones.

Shown here is the full version of the photo from which I got my avatar. It's my own photo. There's a snapping turtle that can be occasionally sighted at a nearby park. Sidenote: snapping turtles look way more elegant in the water.

OMG I can edit the thread OP! I remember this specifically being impossible on Reddit lol
