It was probably just that he was having a dementia episode at the time, but he seemed genuinely happier than I've ever seen him before when he was working that drive thru.
A lot of religious folks "don't believe in divorce." So even if the relationship isn't abusive, they may be incompatible as a couple but just stick with it.
