I don't really get on Facebook anymore, but if there's someone that makes you sad to see on there, you can hide their posts from appearing in your feed without them knowing. I believe that setting is on their profile page.

You can still check their profile on purpose if you want after that.

The stock market is at a record high, but that does little for the bottom 70%.

It's such a difficult thing to process a parent that both abused you and did good things for you. My Dad is still here, but I have a similar dynamic as what you described. I did at one point write and then later gave him a letter describing my experience of his abuse. Both actions felt good, but I'd say just writing it and not sending it was 90% of the catharsis, so it may be worth doing for your benefit even after he's gone.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and I hope you feel better soon.

So far, I've had it with soda water/essence-type seltzer and in a latte as well as a moscow mule. All highly recommended. I'm looking into using it for baking as well.

Shoutouts to the Lebanese corner grocery store that sells very fresh, massive ginger root for cheap.

Y'all, I made ginger syrup, and it was the easiest thing ever and it's sooooo delicious. Took me 40 minutes, but I could get it down to 20 now that I've learned it.

  1. Start some water boiling on the stove. 1 cup of water to 3/4 cup of sugar (you can use a 1:1 ratio to make it sweeter). Stir the water often. It won't need to boil fully to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Rough chop one to two hand-sized piece of ginger.
  3. Pulse in a blender until it's mush, adding a few splashes of water as needed.
  4. Place the blended ginger in a cheesecloth over a fine collander (collander optional)
  5. Wrap, squeeze, then wring dry (really twist it) the cheesecloth until all ginger juice comes out.
  6. Let the sugar water (simple syrup) cool.
  7. Combine the ginger juice with the cooled syrup in a 1:2 or 3:4 ratio.
  8. (Optional) add a half oz of vodka per cup of syrup to improve the shelf life and store in fridge. I've been told it lasts a week without the vodka.

3:4 ratio is very tasty/strong, but use less juice if you want a more mild syrup.

Apparently, you can just pour sugar and ginger juice in a 2:1 ratio in a jar and shake until it dissolves, but that seems a bit annoying.

Apologies for freedom units, I'll reformulate it to grams at some point. If you have a juicer, use that and skip steps two through five. And no, you don't need to peel the ginger.

I have located the two sides of the story for the JSS and Justin (editor/assistant) pay dispute if you want to read it. Feel free to make up your own mind. Justin's Side (sorry it's hard to read, click through to each Twitter post to see the images in full) James Stephanie Sterling's side

I found the links to Justin and JSS's accounting of their dispute. The links are in the comment above yours here.

I don't think racism has a statute of limitations, but I do think that a decade of positive activism can make up for previous reactionary writings.

I have read the above linked Sterling Destructoid article, which is a reactionary response to legitimate concerns about racist themes in an early RE5 trailer. I also read JSS's 2009 article about RE5 in which they claim that RE5 is actually anti-racist and the people calling it racist are the real racist. This article is clearly racist, reactionary content complete with an R slur in the first sentence. I have not found an apology for this.

However, their video right after the 2020 George Floyd protests began--in my opinion--shows they have grown a lot since their review of Resident Evil 5 in 2009. The most relevant section begins at 8:25 of this YouTube video. In the video, they acknowledge systemic racism, racist police brutality, and the inadequacy of most corporations' somber jpeg responses to the police murder + mass peaceful protests without specific, actionable policy promises. They also touch on intersectionalism and relate it back to class struggle and provide links to support anti-racist orgs.

While I would prefer a clear, specific apology, I think they are firmly now a force for anti-racism when they speak on the matter, but they seem to avoid the topic to let others who are more informed speak on it.

Meanwhile, they are consistently anti-terf, anti-transphobia, anti-homophobia, anti-capitalist, pro-worker, pro-union, and call out injustice wherever they see it, in addition to amplifying and sometimes publishing whistleblowers' claims.

I will be the first to call them out if they say or write something racist, but I've been watching their channel since 2015 and I've never seen them do so since that point.

Edit: I wrote the above before I was able to read about Justin and JSS's pay dispute and dueling abuse/exploitation accounts. Links in comment above.
