There have been some great games with development times that long.

Can you name some? I don't mean to be derisive, I just literally can't think of any right now.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 4 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

Unfortunately they're not significantly more fun despite that.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 6 points 5 hours ago (7 children)

Yeah, I've been watching from the sidelines and still haven't seen anything that moves the needle sufficiently.

Where are the games?!

I'm so glad it's not just me calling this stuff out and posting the uncensored shit. Some stuff should be censored in my view - you know, pro-Nazi stuff, that weird shit that encourages anorexia, that sort of stuff - but not dumb memes.

...and particularly when the censorship is so fucking lazy. Jesus, do a quick search for part of the text and you'll find an uncensored original. Post that!

Back in the '80s my British father would get as far as opening his mouth to use the Swedish he'd been practicing before the shopkeeper would preempt him in flawless English "How can I help you, sir?".

My inlaws actually don't speak any English and they're the first adult Swedes I've known that don't. Fortunately I speak Swedish fluently but it was comedically awkward for my wife's previous British boyfriends!

I hope OP edits the post. Stamp out censorship of memes on Lemmy.

Correct. We can have as many names as we like too.

However there's various documents available that are proof that one is using a name. So for example my bank wouldn't let me change my name unless I present something like a deed poll. Said deed poll is literally just a print out with some stock phrasing and the signatures of two witnesses.

We don't have a central database that covers everyone in Britain (unlike, say, Sweden). If I want to change my name I can just start using the new one. Amusingly lots of people in the UK don't know this and are sure it's not the case. I ended up switching banks because the final straw was how poorly the staff were trained on the subject. My new bank and the DVLA did not have similar weird ideas, thankfully, so now my name is updated on my driving licence, etc..

I mentioned how my deed poll is a print out earlier because so many people seem to think it needs to be something notarised, or on special stationery, or something (usually they're not sure what, they just think it seems wrong). When they consult the law they tend to then have a bit of a laugh with me because the law is indeed a bit mental (such as at the registry office when I got married a few months ago).

I don't think that's really the point.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

There's no such thing as "legal names" in the UK.

I was honestly just being flippant.

I do find it quite obnoxious how Microsoft handles Xbox stuff. There's a lot of "because fuck you" to their interface design.

Being friendly to advertisers feels ethically unsound to me.

Finally a way to be rid of that crap? Amazing.

I'm trying to run a load of services and use TrueNAS Scale as the data storage for them. I have three 1 TB disks setup as RAIDZ1 - a single data pool. I've had to unplug the power a few times for various practical reasons and it seems like this setup simply cannot be relied on to function. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's not. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here and cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to be doing.

I take a look at the storage dashboard and see "Unused disks: 3". Okay, let's add them back to my pool ("main"):

Add Disks To:

  • New Pool
  • Existing Pool

...except there's no pools listed under "existing pool". If I create a new one it just wipes the disks. That's no bloody good.

Thankfully I've yet to store any important data on them as I'm still in the testing phase. As far as I can see though, despite the disks being attached to the system by serial number, it gets confused and doesn't keep them through power disruptions.

Is it worth fannying about with TrueNAS? I feel like I might as well just bin ZFS and use an rsync-based backing up of data (I have several other disks, but only three that are the same size).

I painted these mostly with speed paints (and the equivalents from other companies). They came together quite quickly and I had fun with them, which is rather the goal of hobbies, isn't it?

The dice makes me think of the bit in The Dark Tower film where there's a theme park that the residents of that world are perplexed by. Why's there a dice? No one knows - it's always been there. It's Dirty Down rust, if you were wondering: https://dirtydown.co.uk/product/water-soluble-paint-rust-25ml-pot/

I bought a static grass applicator and had fun making my own tufts and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Unlimited tufts!

There's also the boxes - they're not as good as I'd like (the knees get in the way of painting!) but it's a bit of an homage to how GW boxes looked when I first got into the hobby.

I sculpted this lad but for now he's not available (he should be available at the Tenby Games Festival in December, in the unlikely event you're in west Wales! https://www.pembrokeshirewargaming.co.uk/ ) and then eventually he'll be up on Ramshackle Games' shop under my brand (Fox Box).

I'm not sure if this is controversial or not - but I (mostly) don't like games that are primarily set underground.

There are a few exceptions to this, Dungeon Keeper and The Binding of Isaac spring to mind, but mostly I find it actively discouraging. Perhaps it's a desire to explore under the sky, perhaps it's that it feels claustrophobic, or perhaps it's the gloom.

I don't have a problem with the dark or claustrophobia in the real world, so it's not that. Anything that involves dungeon crawling immediately puts me off. I don't want to go down into the dark! I want to be outside!

I wasn't a fan of the Metro series until Exodus, I bounced off Recettear as soon as the dungeon element was introduced. Anything that wants me to spend an extended period underground with monsters is just a massive turn-off for me. Sewer levels and the like also have this, to a lesser extent.

Anyone else have this specific dislike?

I didn't mean to time this one for Orktober, but maybe it's just a happy little accident. He's an obscure Forge World mini from 2007 or so. I've recently been watching Masters of the Air and it made me want to dig him out of my backlog. No idea what I might field him as, but he's a fun sculpt.

There's a couple of more photos here: https://imgur.com/a/cmmgacE

There's a press release about the mini here, if you want to know more: https://ifelix.net/forgeworld-newsletter-171

This crew of Ork-wannabes are my Diggamob. They currently don't have names, apart from the test model - Zagatha (back left). I mostly don't like the old Digga range, but there's a few exceptions, so I went with those.

I've no idea when I'll get around to fielding them in Gorkamorka, but hopefully at some point. I deliberately opted for no heavy weapons on the vehicles to field more bodies. Diggas have access to archeotek and can get some very fancy bits of kit - but to find them and wield them effectively numbers are required.

These are a combination of GW's original minis from 1998 and Red Nebular's Primal Raider range: https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Red%20Nebular

I mainly painted them using contrast/speed paints, but I didn't have the requisite paints when I did the test model, so the skin ended up being done the traditional way. I regret it, but it was too late to do anything about. I'm not overly fond of how they turned out, but hey, done is the best feature.

There's a few more pics here: https://imgur.com/a/07Mzj17

Also, just to pre-empt it, no, the faction aren't called "digganobs". They're called "diggas", you memelords.
