Some old video codecs were proprietary and had to be installed afterwards from a separate repository or package, that might be where that notion is coming from. That being said once the relevant codecs are installed (open-source or proprietary) things just work fine, or you could install VLC or mpv and just call it a day.
Improving the browser doesn't make money, I guess.
I can get Pocket even if I don't use it, and Mozilla VPN is essentially Mullvad but still lines up with Mozilla's principles. But Fakespot is a headscratcher.
Honestly, as a Firefox user, I agree. The Firefox evangelism gets too much for me that I'm genuinely concerned it's going cult-like. There's over-enthusiasm (in which I've fell victim to) and then there's hounding people for bothering to choose a Chromium-based browser.
I use Firefox because it works best for most of my web-browsing workflows, but it has its issues - split screen tabs is one, it helps with my workflow for submitting database entries to MusicBrainz or RateYourMusic. Vivaldi has it, Firefox doesn't, so I'll use Vivaldi when I need to, even if I think Firefox has a bit more polish than Vivaldi. That being said, Vivaldi is more willing to add features that power users coming from Firefox or old, Presto-era Opera want.
I do feel like the evangelism is actually toned down in the Firefox-specific Lemmy community, oddly enough (at least on lemmy.ml). In fact, the top post as of this comment is complaining about the privacy issues with Firefox's upcoming Fakespot integration, and the comments are in agreement.

For me, PayPal said nothing until I called them. I made an expensive purchase via PayPal, they bounced it back with no notification that it was bounced back whatsoever, making it a headache for me and the seller. I had to make sure that it wasn't going out twice, which thankfully it didn't but the lack of an error message or anything was so unhelpful.
I just used my card straight-up after that. The card was under Visa, so it was subject to Visa's checks as well as the bank's own (where you can use SMS or app-based verification).
You're right on the money. They're trying to region lock it. Unlikely that US and possibly UK customers will get it.
We also found references to a region lock in this API, which suggests that Apple could restrict it to specific countries. This wouldn’t make sense for MDM solutions, but it does make sense for enabling sideloading in particular countries only when required by authorities – such as in the European Union.

I was watching a Twitch stream from a programmer and he said the same thing, about Apple switching from bad hardware/good software to good hardware/bad software. I do think modern macOS is so much better than modern Windows, but it’s far from where it was. Though that might just be me being nostalgic; 10.5-10.9 (Leopard to Mavericks) was my personal “golden age”.
