People have multiple accounts - maybe even specifically to view .world, or on .world, and this PSA is what made them think twice before switching to it. I mean, you’re here reading and commenting on this post, and you’re not a beehaw.org user. But you could also have a beehaw account if you wanted. If you did, maybe you’d have been on it browsing local when you saw this.

Not sure why this post is a problem. It’s a good PSA.

https://lemmyverse.net/ is another good one and my personal favorite. Note the instances and communities tab at the top, and other filter/search options.

Clicking the !URL copies it your clipboard, so you can easily paste it to your search bar and find it even if your instance hasn’t connected to that community yet.

This is more of a backend issue that the Lemmy/Fediverse devs should add, I think, but apps automatically searching through these sites would be a convenient workaround for now, if it’s possible. Ultimately I think we’d all like to see all of the votes and stats from all instances all the time.

Check out https://lemmyverse.net/communities

You can sort by posts, comments, subscribers, etc. plus other useful filters. It’s currently the best tool for finding active communities - especially if you’re on a smaller instance.

It’s useful because it shows numbers across all instances - not just in relation to your own.

You can see that some of the top communities are not English speaking, which may be why you don’t see them in your feed.

It’s where the fun begins

Clearly they knew searching for Memmy is going to be hot shit, so they added Mummy for the collateral views.

Up until just 2 days ago, searching Lemmy on the iOS App Store returned no results. Now there’s Memmy and more apps on the way. That will make a huge difference for casual users who hear about Lemmy but wouldn’t bother trying to figure it out before jumping in. I can’t predict what will cause more waves, but a steady stream of new users seems likely.

People have been really vocal about their desire to group communities. Whether that happens on the communities’ end or on the user’s end via apps (like Multi-Reddits), or both, I’m confident it’ll happen eventually. I feel like either of those are a better solution than encouraging communities to consolidate, personally. Embrace the beauty and quirks of decentralization.

It’s exciting to see all the growth and improvements happening so quickly. The sky’s the limit for Lemmy.

It’s not really the content quality or mass usage that bothers me. The Fediverse is built on ideals of open source, privacy, decentralization, controlling your own experience and your own data, etc… All these things are incompatible with Meta and other mega corporations. In fact they are a direct threat to corporate greed. Meta is not a friend of the Fediverse and its premise, and their meddling here can only erode those ideals. Regardless of content, number of users, and so on, I hope the devs, at least, can stay the course and not cave to corporate pressure, and that all the Twitter/Reddit refugees can remember why they ultimately left those platforms in the first place.

“You have any games on your phone?”

“Just kidding, I know exactly what’s on your phone.”

Greene’s mistake was directing it at one of their own. There isn’t a limit to how terrible they can be to everyone else.
