I wiped and deleted my account, and haven’t been back except for a few specific searches and occasional clicks from Lemmy links. But part of me still has some hope that there will be changes that lead to a reversal back to free API, or at least that each new story and new fuckup will continue to push more people to Lemmy. More broadly, corporate fuckups in general will hopefully push people to decentralized platforms, so it’s always going to be interesting to read about.

I mean, we are on a Reddit clone that was created out of spite years ago, so bad news about Reddit will be relevant here for a while.

I can see more people rotating their subscriptions with all this nonsense. Subscribe to Netflix for a month to catch up on whatever, drop it and use Disney Plus for a month to catch up on Star Wars shows, drop it and go to Max for a month, etc. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ll start fighting that next. Witcher already split their season across two months - probably just to squeeze two payments out of viewers.

If there was an app that made it as easy as tapping a switch to on/off each subscription, then I might not set sail. Piracy is mostly about convenience after all, and juggling subscriptions is not convenient.

I don’t know the history of Reddit’s voting system, but I think controversial was a way to show posts/comments that were “unpopular” after they removed the display of both upvotes and downvotes and replaced it with percentage.

So here they could just add a sort by most downvotes, since they are displayed separately. I guess another option for sorting by most-equal upvotes vs. downvotes would be fine too, just not as simple for what would often be the same effect. Maybe sorting by most downvotes would even be preferable depending on what you’re looking for.

In other words, add a “Bottom” sort option as the simple opposite to “Top.” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I love seeing the memes devs are choosing for the screenshots for these apps. Well done!

IMO the post bots and bot-only communities should be on their own dedicated instances, and the communities should be labeled that they are bot communities - right in the name.

Then people shouldn’t think twice if they want to copy content from a bot and post it in a “real” community for discussion - especially content that is just a link to a video or an article. It would be weird to do that with story content copied from Reddit (like AITA.) But for links and even some questions and discussion posts, they deserve views and replies.

That way the repost bots would actually serve a purpose and generate “real” content without using resources from “real” instances.

But I feel the bots as they currently operate are actually stifling content that should be posted be real people. e.g. someone finds an article, but sees it was already posted by a bot, so they don’t post it while the bot’s article falls off the page because no one replies or half of users have them blocked.

No matter where your loyalty is, Nintendo consoles compliment it with their IP - especially Switch for its mobility. I mainly play on PC, but I always get Nintendo’s consoles because I love their originals. They’re ideal for playing accessible multiplayer games when friends come over. I never feel like it’s a choice between one or the other.

I’d add these:

• Mario Kart 8 (this is a must) • Mario Party Superstars (a must for 4 players IRL) • Super Smash Bros Ultimate • TOTK (after BOTW, when you’re ready for more) • Splatoon 3 (amazing shooter if you like online MP)

If you’re looking for the Pro Controller feeling in handheld mode, check out the Hori Split Pad Pro. It doesn’t have motion, which sucks, but it feels great for games that don’t need it. You could also find a grip case and caps that cover the sticks to make the joycons feel bigger.

It’s frustrating to see peoples’ imaginations run wild with AI. They’re not building “sentient” machines. There will never be machines that are sentient in anything other than appearance, and we’re notoriously easy to fool in that way.

My favorite way to describe AI that I’ve heard is “applied statistics.” It’s basically just processing huge amounts of data, very fast, simultaneously, and then presenting conclusions that are usually very likely.

Yes, it will be used to make weapons that are horrifically efficient, but likewise it will be used to make defenses that are equally efficient.

I think the good will ultimately outweigh the bad. Hopefully by a long shot.
