Do you support carbon tax? I’d have thought most Lemmings would. Letting prices rise without needing to pass carbon tax legislation should offer similar benefit: If people think twice about using gas due to price, and seek alternate ways to commute, like bikes, trains, carpooling, etc. then that’s good for the environment. And that’s in addition to the environmental advantages of not producing more ethanol.

Great, I love saving “up to 25 cents” on gas in exchange for increasing pollution and needing to replace my car earlier.

As of 2021, only 37% of active doctors were women, but it was on an upward trend. I wonder if the disparity can help explain some of it, i.e. men are more likely to pursue the profession, but the women who do pursue it are more likely to be talented and successful at it - or they just work harder because they need to overcome biases.

You know the old saying, “What do you call the doctor who graduated last in his class? …A doctor.” Maybe women are more driven to not be the worst doctors. Maybe male doctors can scrape by their whole careers and still be respected and successful for some reason.

You can set up a trust and have a lawyer accept it to keep you anonymous, even in public winner states. Obviously you buy the ticket when it’s at 1 billion+. Now you invest it after taxes and live off 20 mill+ yearly yield.

You start a hands off small business to launder your own legal money. This is how you explain to your family that you were able to build a small modest home at least an hour away - just far enough to be inconvenient but not impossible for family to visit. Your real home is a custom built stone castle just over the hill in your back yard. You build a tunnel connecting them in case family drops in unannounced.

Or just do the first part and fake your own death. Depends on your relationship with family and friends.

Plastic food storage bags, at least since I saw this: https://lemmy.world/post/13153346

Mmm, marinated chicken with a pinch of PFAS.

It’ll be interesting to see if it applies to facial recognition. In iOS, at least, you need to look at the phone to unlock it. That’s an intentional action. If you look to the side or close your eyes, it won’t work.

So if you’re conscious, you can’t easily be forced to unlock the phone with your face and eyes if you’re able to resist. But if you’re unconscious, then maybe they could use your face (assuming your eyes aren’t rolled back into your head because the cops gave you brain damage.)

Thanks for the detailed advice!

I ended up just getting a Dell G2724D for now. It was on sale for only $200, so the decision wasn’t as weighty as the others, and I know it will be a solid upgrade over what I’m using now. I’ll use the rest of my budget to invest in some Ergotron arms.

I’ll watch what happens with OLED prices and/or longevity improvements, and will look at them more seriously for a dedicated gaming monitor in a year or two. At that point, the Dell can be dedicated to productivity or it can be demoted to side monitor.

Thanks for the reply. My understanding is that Nano IPS is LG’s term for IPS with enhanced color gamut, correct? It looks to me like the EX270QM probably uses similar tech - maybe even one of the same panels, not sure - with its 10-bit 1.07 billion color “98%” DCI-P3 coverage.

I’m not sure I’m interested in a 21:9 flat panel - if I go UW I’d prefer curved. So I’ll look out for 10-bit curved UW IPS options to compete against the 270QM.

Unfortunately, since I can’t commit to a dedicated gaming-only monitor, I’m avoiding OLED for now. Too worried about burn-in when I go AFK and the screensaver fails to work (Windows…), or when I work with a window in the same place for hours day to day. If I had the space and budget for two dedicated large monitors, I’d go for one OLED in a heartbeat.

There’s also the bonus of showing kids that good dogs come from shelters and not just breeders, and definitely not from puppy mills. These kids will remember this when it’s time to get a dog.

For browsing/work, bind page up and down, and home and end to the fancy buttons. And of course forward/back and volume up/down.

I don’t think I can use a non-mmo mouse for productivity anymore.
