It’s a term for insiders. My mother will never talk about “the fediverse.”
The “Open Social Web” is a much better term. It tells you everything you need to know.
This is exactly what we need to get the masses off corporate social media sites.
An app that shows content from across social services has more appeal than being on just bluesky or insta.
It’s only in the nightly builds, so unless you’re on mastodon.social or a server with the latest build you won’t see it yet.
As for what exactly shows when it’s live, someone posted it was in their notifications.
Once it’s implemented in Mastodon, it should make it easier to request the same feature from the Lemmy devs.
Using the term “Open Social Web” instead of fediverse or mastodon seems to help a lot. TechCrunch and other news orgs use the term more nowadays and Meta mentions it as well as the about us on Bluesky.
This is the most common reply to any mention of onboarding newcomers, but it’s not helpful. It’d be much more productive to hear specific criticisms so we can address them.
- Is clicking the big “Join” (the default server) on joinmastodon.org really that big of a hurdle?
- Is a firehouse home feed required to engage users from the start?
Open AI changed to a for profit company in a heartbeat and these folks can too.
More worrying is who owns them and their funding sources.
Yeah, that’s on me.
Normally I’d post the image and copy over the post body, however, this account is too new to upload images, so I’ve been linking directly to mastodon.
Absolutely agree. Saying we don’t have the user base or growth of commercial sites is a straw man argument. That’s not the goal. Building solid communities of real people is.
For the top services, I’d make each of the blue background circles a different color to better denote that they’re proprietary and incompatible.
For the Fediverse section, you could add Tumblr, and other services who also federate via activity pub to show our interoperability and expansive reach.
