I think this move might help democrats in the long run; In that this will preserve the teeter totter pattern of majorities. The GOP would love nothing more than to win all three branches of federal government and enough governors to stop another election from ever happening and barring Democrats from office. By making SCOTUS outline the criteria needed to run for and hold office it allows Dems an opportunity to take back control in '26 & '28.
My older brothers are zen fascists in denial. Both are well off Xennials whose struggle with white fragility which inspires the most kneejerk reactionary takes. They literally just argue however they need to in the moment and have zero coherent views. They are terrible at sources, they will cherry pick whatever article agrees with them especially if it's a 'local' news outlet. There takes are so clearly self centered that I often just argue that really most Americans are selfish assholes just like them. Therefore they shouldn't be surprised they're unhappy because that's the logical outcome of the bucket crab mentality.

I know nothing about the Southwest, I've lived around the Great lakes. I do think we'll see voting apathy amongst the under 40 crowd on the national scale and that could jeopardize the southern states. Biden did win NM by 10 points, so he'll probably get a close win. It also nets the fewest electoral votes of the six I mentioned so the GOP may not target it as much.
I've got a feeling that Trump will skirt any form of justice and die peacefully one day. It seems like more people are coming around to the idea that Trump will remain a free man and maybe president because the government really doesn't want to stop him. Let SCOTUS write some more crazy bullshit further delegitimizing their standing. The more jarring the spectacle of the US government becomes the more likely people could lose faith in it's institutions.
I think there will be 6 close races. WI, MI and PA in the North and AZ, NM and GA in the South. A straight north-south split would leave Trump a few points shy of 270, he'll need at least one of those northern states to win. It will be very close and I agree that Pennsylvania or Michigan goes to Trump since democrats can't do electoral math. If the Dems lose both while taking the Southern swing states the two could tie at 269 which is the funniest outcome.
