What could we possibly learn from this, other than brand new ways to fuck up our environment?

We could learn brand new ways to fix up our environment.

we should try fixing the things that are actually causing it

You may have noticed, we're trying that already and it's not working particularly well. Your proposal, then, is to not try anything new but instead just keep on trying the thing we know isn't working?

No, this is ridiculous.

The left are luddites and the right are climate change deniers.

Yet another area where I find myself going "well, at least maybe there's China?" They've got the right combination of skin in the game, economic/technological capability, and a government that can simply ignore all these ridiculous moral panics and mass idiocies.

It's really sad that that seems like our best bet. I really don't want to be anywhere near a position that seems like "yay, authoritarians."

And therefore we should not do anything that could help us learn about this?

Yeah, this is one of the few areas where Reddit does a better job than the Fediverse, IMO.

Looks like he already drew you in, though. Catch-22.

For folks who are lamenting that the Canada/US relationship has cratered because Trump was reelected, this is something that's been an ongoing problem since 1982. Canada has been on the "abused" side of this relationship for a long time, it's just sighed and endured it until now.

No, what I had in mind was an ironic response to someone who didn't know his history, which would have told him why the whole idea of a "voting exam" was a bad one.

Perhaps the exam should have included a section on the history of civil rights and voting suppression in the United States.

I'm a reasonably good swimmer, I've had plenty of training and experience. And if I was in a flood zone I would definitely want to have a life jacket on. Being a good swimmer is only going to help a little bit in a mess like that.

Avoid getting into the water in the first place, of course. Flood water sucks. Climb on your roof, climb a tree, ideally evacuate before the water gets there. But if you're in a situation where you might fall into the flood water anyway, have a life jacket on.

Indeed. I was in a thread on Reddit about exactly this subject, and it was truly bizarre how adamant a lot of people were about how you should not having a life jacket. They were pointing out all these things - you could get trapped inside your house, it doesn't save you from being hit by debris, it doesn't protect you against diseases that are in the water.

Yeah, those are all bad things. Don't jump into floodwaters for fun! Stay out of the flood water if you can at all possibly manage it. But if I'm in a place where I might end up falling into floodwaters anyway, it's far far better to have a life vest on than to not have it on.

I don't often use the word "cringe", but IMO this warrants it. This silliness is going to discredit attempts at serious conversation.
