I don’t think the general public will walk away caring much no matter what you say. I’m not trying to dismiss your question. Though I can say from personal experience, that an hour isn’t enough time to convince most non-techie people to change their online habits at all.
Most people I’ve talked to about any of those topics essentially already has a vague idea that it’s an issue, but they just kinda shrug since nothing’s happed to them yet and they think its probably too late anyway.
Fair enough, that’s on me then. I’m personally just getting tired of the narrative people keep pushing that the country is full of irredeemable idiots when that doesn’t actually help anything.
I’d argue the country is largely filled with people focused on their own immediate lives and are disengaged from larger national politics and social issues.
To argue that the country must be filled with “emotionally reactive morons” belies your own sense of superiority and also how your perspective is swayed (and possibly harmed) by overconsumption of the very media most people avoid.
The vast majority of people I meet are worried about their families, their bills, their jobs and their futures. Politics obviously affects all of these things, but political media is just straight up bad for your mental health and I can’t blame anyone for checking out.
I’m an alcoholic, so I don’t allow myself to have alcohol at home. If I go out, I have a pretty strict four drink maximum. On rare occasions I’ll drink more if I’m with friends at some kind of event or spending the night out at clubs.
The smart option would be to stop drinking, especially considering the damage alcohol has done to my life. I’m probably not going to anytime soon though, because I love drinking and this system has worked really well for 4 years.
Back in the day, I used to put down at least half a liter of liquor a night. Shit was expensive.
What exactly is there to judge here? There’s almost no context. When I was an English major, this was the process for writing literally any paper. You pick what you want to write about and try to find published articles that support your claims. If you can’t find any, pick something else.
I think for older folks at least it has to do with the chemicals they were exposed to. I’ve met countless men in their 50s who really are just angry all the time and permanently on a hair trigger. Then they fondly talk about the good old days when trucks would gas their blocks with pesticides and they’d chase after them as kids. You also can’t discount the amount lead they were exposed to which is known to make people more aggressive.
Reddit isn’t representative of America. I don’t think any one forum or social media is representative of the country really. America is a big country with people of pretty much any opinion on anything.
I’m not sure what American media you’ve consumed nor what picture you have of the country, but it’s likely propaganda. You won’t be able to fly in and expect wherever you land to be what you envisioned. You could with a bit of research find a place that has people who agree with you and will welcome you.
I live in New York (the state, not the city) and much of the place prides itself on being welcoming to foreigners and immigrants of all types. Every job I’ve had was with foreign coworkers and I’ve always enjoyed talking to them and learning about their experiences and perspectives. That said it’s not sunshine and rainbows here right now, especially for foreigners.
The country is in a crisis of inequality and it’s hard to get by in most places and New York is no different. Unless you have good money and good qualifications, you can expect to have to work two jobs here and you’ll still struggle with money whether you’re a foreigner or not. The US government is currently hostile to the plights of those struggling and so no relief seems to be coming soon. This stress has then also been turned against foreigners and immigrants by powerful people.
I don’t know very much about the rest of the country’s treatment of foreigners since I’m an American already and travel is expensive. Still if you’re willing to deal with the struggle, you could likely find a home and friends in New York regardless of what your own beliefs and opinions are. That said, you should wait a few years for this country’s xenophobia to stop being so militarized.
Maybe if those ratings came from a movie theater exit poll, then I’d agree. Instead it’s like most other self reported ratings online. Essentially no one enters their rating except for: the people who really liked it, people who really didn’t like it, wannabe critics, weirdos who like to spend their time rating things despite never having seen them, and bots. The vast majority of people don’t rate movies because they don’t care enough. In my opinion ratings are just easily manipulated data that often exists just to reinforce conformity of opinion.
If you look at the ratings for the first “Kissing Booth” movie, there’s tons of reviews that essentially say the lead actress wasn’t hot enough. Then you consider that despite the first movie being rated terribly, the company thought it was actually well enough received for them to make two more movies.
I watched the entire “Kissing Booth” trilogy with a friend recently. They’re cute teen rom-coms and I enjoyed all of the movies and characters. The writing is corny, but it seemed to intentionally have a kind of theater club vibe to me. I kept thinking the cast must have had a lot of fun.
Should it be rated higher? No idea. I think ratings are stupid tbh.
I never got a talk and I figured things out. Maybe just tell him that he’s hitting puberty and he’s gonna experience changes and that’s normal. Admit you don’t know how it is for boys and offer to help him find answers to any questions he has. I think if you show a bit of vulnerability in not knowing, he may be more open and willing to talk to you about what he goes through.
From my memory. Masturbation started around that age, but pretty infrequently at first and the first few times were accidental. I thought I peed myself and was really ashamed of it. It took a few years for me to figure out what had happened from other kids making jokes about “jerking off”. It’s probably healthy to at some point explain that porn isn’t reality and to warn him to use lube and not squeeze too hard.
As far as hormonal stuff goes, boys around that age get hard randomly and it can be frustrating. Actually everything can be frustrating, most boys I knew around that age had short tempers and I was definitely a little ball of rage. I had anger management issues back then though, so it may not be so bad for him. Either way maybe helping find a way to exert himself and blow off steam would be helpful. Adult stress management techniques may be helpful if he’s open to them, but adults telling me to take deep breaths or count something only made me angrier back then.
Growth spurts can be painful too, but I grew from like 4’10” to 6’ during age 12-14 and it caused me some minor joint problems for a while. I’m not sure if it’s the same for everyone.
For the entirety of high school I only played Team Fortress 2, League of Legends, and Melee. I have 2000+ hrs in TF2 and probably more in the other two. Then in college I was on the Overwatch team and played in the college league, I have a bit under 5000 hrs in that.
No games I have come close to that kinda play time and none probably will since I have less time to game and I’ve kinda been losing interest in gaming in general.
